That’s not just a shocking statistic — it’s proof that the system has long failed women.

But finally….

California Eliminated Time Limits for Childhood Sexual Abuse Claims
• As of January 1, 2024, California eliminated the civil statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse claims. That means if the abuse happened on or after that date, survivors can bring a claim anytime.
• For abuse that occurred before 2024, the old rules still apply: a survivor can file until their 40th birthday, or within 5 years after discovering the psychological harm — whichever is later.
• For adult sexual assaults (ages 18+), current law (for assaults on or after January 1, 2019) allows you to sue within 10 years of the assault or within 3 years after discovering the injury.
• There’s also AB 2777, which opened a “lookback window” (Jan 1, 2023 to Dec 31, 2026) allowing survivors to revive civil claims for assaults between 2009 and 2019 that would otherwise be time-barred — especially in cases where an entity “covered up” the abuse.
