AI Surveillance Cameras Are Becoming Targets. Why?
Across the United States, there has been an increase in incidents involving AI-powered license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, including systems operated by companies such as Flock Safety. The debate is no longer just about technology—it is about the balance between public safety, privacy, and constitutional rights.
Law enforcement agencies across thousands of communities use these systems to assist in criminal investigations, locate stolen vehicles, and identify suspects. Many agencies consider the technology an effective investigative tool.
At the same time, privacy advocates, civil liberties organizations, and several municipalities have raised concerns regarding data collection, retention policies, government oversight, and the potential expansion of surveillance beyond its original purpose. Some jurisdictions have chosen to discontinue these programs, while others continue to support their use.
