Montag received his J.D. from the University of San Diego in 1994, and his B.A. in Near Eastern Studies and International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. He also studied economics at the University of Uppsala in Sweden. He is a member of the State Bar of California. He is an Immigration and Nationality Law Specialist certified by the State Bar of California Board of Legal specialization. He was Chairman of the State Bar of California’s Immigration and Nationality Law Commission, a part of the Board of Legal Specialization. He was also a San Diego American Immigration Lawyers Association Chapter Chair. Mr. Montag has lectured at numerous conferences hosted by AILA and the State Bar of California in matters relating to the immigration law and has published widely in the field. Montag has argued successfully before the Federal District Court for the Southern District of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has also testified as an expert witness on immigration law in the federal district court and the California Bar Court. He volunteers as a fee arbitrator for the San Diego County Bar Association. Montag was named an Attorney of the Year by California Lawyer Magazine for extraordinary achievement in immigration law in 2005.
