In the wake of the Me Too Movement, some men have expressed concern over not knowing how to interact with female co-workers.
One major question many men have posed is, “Can I still hug female co-workers?” The short answer is: yes! However, consider these rules:
1. Hugs should not be common, but occasionally, can be a great way to show a co-worker or employee that they are valued or appreciated.
2. My favorite tip on making sure your hugs are “work appropriate” is to use the Catch and Release Rule! In other words, hugs should not linger (or involve any grabbing!).
3. Another favorite rule of mine is “When in doubt, don’t touch.”
(I think we all know Ron Swanson does not want to be touched!)
These tips came from a great presentation by the Enright Inn of Court recently, focusing on the Campaign on how we can spread the word and correct the behavior brought to light by the Me Too Movement. Below are some other great tips from the presentation:
— Spread the Word — Communicate
1. See something say something.
2. Be an “active ally,” not a passive bystander.
3. Encourage & reward reporting.
4. Fear not, mentor women.
5. Think before you drink.
6. Open door policy (for reporting & to avoid harassment/assault behind closed doors).
7. Communicate concerns and boundaries.
8. The “Platinum Rule”: ask permission, don’t assume.
9. When in doubt, don’t touch.
10. Men can be harassed or assaulted too.
If you have been sexually harassed or know someone who has experienced sexual harassment, please feel free to contact Marxen Law for a free thirty (30) minute telephonic or in-person consultation.
