So my thoughts on this have always been that the timeline was wonky with when they said they heard the scream and when Lisa Pruett had planned to be over. If that was her screaming, wouldn't she have been very earlier for their little late night rendezvous which was supposed to be between 12:30-1? What if the scream was totally unrelated? Wasn't it Dan Dreifort SEO that offered the correlation between the scream and Lisa's death after he had found her body? Didn't he question why she would have been there so early? If she was supposed to signal she was there with pebbles on the window, and presumably she didn't throw any since she was supposedly already dead, why did he go outside in the first place where he was in a position to discover her body? My guess is, Dan Dreifort killed Lisa Pruett and he lucked out that there also happened to be an event that night (the scream) that got some attention from his family that raised alarms. His mother actually believed the scream to be somewhat unremarkable and said it faded quickly. Maybe it was just someone creaming as they drove past in a car like one of them postulated. So I think Dan Dreifort made it up as an alibi for him killing her. That or....Dan Dreifort told his dad what he had done and his dad helped him concoct the story. Either way I don't think the mom was involved, but she did hear the scream and verified the timeline, which leads me to believe the scream was unrelated but cleverly used as a way to have a person unrelated to and with no knowledge of the crime verify the time line. Hope that makes sense.Sorry for my "dizzying intellect" :p As for a motive, teenagers can be fickle, and their hearts are often given away freely and rapidly. What if Lisa Pruett came there that night to tell Dan Dreifort in person (because she did care about him) that while he was in the hospital she developed feelings for someone else? But Dan Dreifort thought she came there to have s*x like they had done before. The unrealized expectation coupled with his fragile mental state sent him in a rage and he killed her.
