The Lindsay Clancy trial ended in a mistrial today.

Civil rights attorney Joseph Richardson joined Good Day LA on FOX 11 earlier this week to break down the case, including the burden of proof at its center: it was on the prosecution, not the defense, to prove Clancy wasn’t experiencing psychosis.

After days of a deadlocked jury, the defense made a last-minute appeal to keep the case from being declared a mistrial by getting a holdout juror dismissed. It came up short, and the judge declared a mistrial. Prosecutors now must decide whether to retry the case.

Joe’s take: transparency is important in high-profile cases, but we shouldn’t lose sight of the tragedy beneath it all.
