Today was the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, in association with the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, annual reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Each year, on the steps of every courthouse in the state, criminal defense lawyers read the founding document to reiterate what we believe and stand for as a profession.

I'm proud that I have been a member of SACDLA since I first became a lawyer and consider it to be one of my biggest professional honors to be President of this great organization.

Today marks the 6th anniversary of the Law Office of Roland J. Garcia.

In that time, I have helped hundreds of clients navigate the complex and often scary criminal justice system. I’ve tried many cases, secured many, many more dismissals, and secured many great outcomes for my clients.

I give thanks to God for any successes I have experienced, and I look forward to continuing to serve my clients for years to come.

Can felons vote in Texas?

I was asked today about voting eligibility today and wanted to share this because I think many people will be surprised at the answer. The short answer is YES, felons can vote in Texas as long as they have completed their entire sentence.

If a person is in prison, on felony probation, or is on parole, they are NOT eligible to vote. But once that sentence is completed and the person is discharged, the right to vote is automatically restored, and they can register to vote.

If a person is on Deferred Adjudication for a felony, they are not convicted, so they CAN vote, even if they are still on Deferred.

Don't let your past stand in the way of making a difference in the future. If you are eligible, please learn about the issues and candidates, and make an informed vote.

I wrote this paragraph in the first motion for PR bond I filed after the current outbreak began. That was on March 16 when there were 0 cases reported.

As of yesterday, there were 157 cases confirmed at the jail.

Looks like I was right.
