EAGLE PASS, Texas — Local attorney René Muñoz has been sworn in as a board member of the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, marking a significant professional milestone.

Muñoz, a former assistant district attorney and member of the Maverick County Bar Association, currently serves as a public defender within the Bexar County court system, where he represents court-appointed clients in criminal cases.

In his role, Muñoz has developed a reputation for aggressively advocating on behalf of his clients, taking cases through trial when necessary and working toward favorable outcomes, including not guilty verdicts or reduced charges when supported by the facts of each case.

Today in Court was able to successfully advocate for my client to receive substance use treatment in lieu of confinement to address the root cause of her issues to get her life back. There is a long road ahead in terms or recovery but am grateful we opened up this avenue for her to give her another fighting chance!

Unfortunately we landed a bit short of our bid to be elected Judge of Bexar County Court 1 (around 4% differential). There is nothing that I would have changed as it was a remarkable experience. I had the opportunity to meet with people from all walks of life in our great community of San Antonio. Thank you to all my supporters, family and friends that helped me get onto the ballot. Although we did not prevail, like the famous saying goes, “if you do not succeed you must try, try again.” I am looking forward to applying what I l’ve learned through this experience to future endeavors. Thank you once again 🙏🏼

Today I was able to meet with Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales to discuss Criminal Justice policies here in Bexar County. Although the D.A.‘s Office and the Judiciary are independent of one another it is important to develop and foster these relationships to ensure that just and fair processes are in place to all people that appear before the Court.

At 6:15 p.m. this evening a jury rendered a NOT GUILTY verdict in favor of my client on his assault case!!! I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to defend those that need help within the legal system. The tie I am wearing was that of my father’s and during this whole process I just kept on reminding myself what he would tell me, “ si trabajas duro todo es posible” and for me to always do my best. This is the type of work ethic and compassion I hope to instill as Judge of Bexar County Court #1 in the future!!!

Happy Friday! Getting out in the community has allowed me to learn a lot about the great citizens of Bexar County.

A program that a number of people are unaware of is the Pre Trial Diversion Program. Applicants that are charged with certain minor class A and B misdemeanor offenses can apply and participate in this program to have their case dismissed. Is usually for 1st time offenders and those with limited criminal histories. The program consists of classes and community service hours to complete, so these individuals can obtain education with the goal of never reentering the criminal justice system again!!
