Luis von Ahn’s Journey: Breaking Barriers and Empowering Learners Everywhere
Born in Guatemala and raised in a single-parent household, Luis von Ahn witnessed firsthand the inequality in education that many communities face. That early experience inspired him to create technology that makes learning more accessible for everyone. 💡
He co-developed CAPTCHA, the tool that helps distinguish humans from bots, and later created reCAPTCHA, which helped digitize millions of books. 📚
As the co-founder of Duolingo, Luis continues to revolutionize education — and in 2020, Duolingo launched Duolingo ABC to help children build early literacy skills. đŸ«
His innovations have earned him numerous awards and global recognition, but most importantly, his work has empowered Hispanic communities and learners worldwide by making education free, fun, and accessible to all. 🌎💚 ❀

CĂ©sar ChĂĄvez and the Theater That Wouldn’t Move Him

Before the marches, before the union organizing, before the speeches, a young CĂ©sar ChĂĄvez walked into a segregated movie theater in California. He and his friends sat in the “whites-only” section. When staff told him to move, he simply said: “No.” Police were called, but no charges were filed because there was no actual law. The next Sunday, CĂ©sar and his friends came back and sat all throughout the theater. No arrests were made. The theater was never segregated again. On leave from the US Navy in 1944.
They served. They sacrificed. They resisted. These aren’t just Hispanic stories. They’re American stories.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s honor them. Let’s remember them. Let’s keep telling their stories.

Sylvia Mendez — The Girl Who Desegregated California Schools

In 1945 Sylvia Mendez was just 9 years old when she was told she couldn’t attend a “whites-only” school in California.
She didn’t speak up yet, but her family did. Her parents, immigrants of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage, filed a lawsuit against the school district.
They weren’t lawyers or activists; They were just parents who believed their daughter deserved better.
In 1947, their case, Mendez v. Westminster, ended segregation in California schools seven years before Brown v. Board of Education would do the same across the nation.
Sylvia would grow up to become a nurse and later a civil rights advocate, dedicating her life to fighting for equal education.
In 2011, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, honoring the stand her family took for justice.
One little girl. One brave family. A case that changed history.

Every year during Hispanic Heritage Month, we take time to celebrate culture, community, and the many contributions of Hispanic Americans. Today, we also pause to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those whose stories have too often been overlooked by history.

Private Marcelino Serna — WWI’s Forgotten Hero

Marcelino Serna crossed the U.S.–Mexico border in search of opportunity. When World War I began, he didn’t wait to be called, he volunteered to serve a country that had yet to recognize him as a citizen.

Facing discrimination and language barriers, Serna persevered. On the battlefield, he displayed extraordinary courage, singlehandedly capturing dozens of enemy soldiers and continuing to fight despite being wounded twice. He went on to become one of the most decorated American soldiers of the war.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we remember Private Serna’s legacy as a reminder that patriotism knows no borders, and that the fight for recognition and equality often begins long before it is granted.
