Friends, I wanted to share something important. As a board member at Texas Public Radio, I see firsthand how vital it is to our community. We bring you local news you trust, connect people at community events, and provide a wonderful classical music escape on KPAC.

Now, public media is facing a serious threat. The government is looking to take back $1.1 billion in funding, which would really hurt newsrooms like ours and could even force smaller stations off the air.

We just met Fulya Degirmence, this year’s recipient of the St. Mary’s Clarence “Clem” V. Lyons Endowed Law Scholarship. What a pleasure!! She is poised to graduate this month from the St. Mary’s University School of Law, and to begin her prep for the Texas bar exam. She has a long, impressive resume, packed with high academic performance and public service, including clinic work focusing on consumer advocacy, representing tenants facing eviction, and defending the civil rights of child immigrants. I can’t imagine where she found the time. As an immigrant herself, she has faced and been inspired by her own financial challenges. She credits our modest scholarship in part, and tells us it helped her focus on her studies and her work for clients of these tremendous St. Mary’s law clinics. Having met her, I know she would’ve persevered under any circumstances, but we’re so proud to be part of her beautiful story.
