The recent expression of solidarity by members of the Hazara community residing in New York, following the tragic terrorist attack in Washington, D.C., represents a commendable and highly responsible civic action. Incidents of terrorism, beyond inflicting direct harm on individuals and public safety, can deeply affect the social perception and psychological well-being of immigrant communities—particularly when the perpetrator originates from the same country of origin.
Terrorism, in all its forms, constitutes a violation of human dignity and a grave threat to peaceful coexistence. In such circumstances, a clear and principled stance from within the immigrant community is essential. The deliberate and conscientious action taken by these Hazara residents—an action that has received notable attention from U.S. media—carries two important messages: an expression of sympathy and respect for the victims and their families, and a firm condemnation of all acts of violence, extremism, and terrorism.
Such public declarations play a constructive role in strengthening social trust, countering stigmatization, and preventing potential adverse consequences for Afghan immigrant communities in the United States. Moreover, this initiative offers civil society organizations, advocacy groups, and institutions supporting immigrant rights an important opportunity to reaffirm that the actions of an individual do not and must not define an entire community.
This responsible and transparent engagement serves as a model for how immigrant communities can contribute to public understanding, promote dialogue, and reinforce shared values of peace, dignity, and mutual respect within the broader society.
