📰I’ve spent over two decades fighting for immigrant and refugee rights in Texas, and today I'm compelled to share a story that needs to be heard. It’s about what people fleeing violence will do to find safety–and also what politicians will do when trying to advance their careers.

Back in 2017, I represented multiple survivors who narrowly escaped death in the back of an 18-wheeler. Ten other human beings, including the brother of one of my clients, lost their lives trying to find freedom and safety in the U.S. Many more have died since. This harrowing experience is all too common and is a direct result of harsh immigration policies.

On June 4th, President Biden announced new border closures, with San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg playing the role of his surrogate in the media. As someone who has dedicated my life to protecting the rights of immigrants, I can't stay silent when I know that more will likely die as a result.

Today, on Juneteenth, we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved Black people in the United States and reflect on the ongoing pursuit of freedom and justice for all. As an immigration law firm, we cannot overlook the parallel between the delay in news reaching enslaved people in Texas and the struggles faced by immigrants and refugees in ICE detention or vulnerable circumstances, cut off from access to legal information about their rights to asylum and humanitarian protection.

Just as the news of emancipation arrived late to those in Texas, we see a similar pattern today, where individuals seeking refuge often encounter barriers preventing them from obtaining accurate information about their rights and legal options. It is our duty to address this disparity and fight for justice on behalf of those who have faced immense hardships and persecution.

We stand in solidarity with all individuals in immigration detention or vulnerable situations, working tirelessly to ensure their rights are respected and protected. We believe in a world where no person is denied access to legal information or the opportunity to seek asylum and protection.

On this Juneteenth, let us recommit ourselves to dismantling systemic barriers and promoting equality, inclusivity, and justice for all. Together, we can create a society that upholds the principles of freedom and fairness, empowering those in need to find safety and hope.

Celebrate Eid with us!

Eid Mubarak to all our dear friends in the San Antonio Muslim community and around the world! We are honored to have been invited by the San Antonio Afghan Community Center to participate in a wonderful celebration. We also appreciate the opportunity to address your members about the immigration crisis that still affects those who evacuated after the Taliban's takeover.

At Jonathan D. Ryan Law, we stand with the Afghan community to ensure that each individual obtains permanent status in the United States and to organize together in support of passing the Afghan Adjustment Act. It's critical that the U.S. provide permanent status and a path to Citizenship for all Afghan evacuees and their families!
