📰I’ve spent over two decades fighting for immigrant and refugee rights in Texas, and today I'm compelled to share a story that needs to be heard. It’s about what people fleeing violence will do to find safety–and also what politicians will do when trying to advance their careers.
Back in 2017, I represented multiple survivors who narrowly escaped death in the back of an 18-wheeler. Ten other human beings, including the brother of one of my clients, lost their lives trying to find freedom and safety in the U.S. Many more have died since. This harrowing experience is all too common and is a direct result of harsh immigration policies.
On June 4th, President Biden announced new border closures, with San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg playing the role of his surrogate in the media. As someone who has dedicated my life to protecting the rights of immigrants, I can't stay silent when I know that more will likely die as a result.
Read my latest op-ed in the San Antonio newspaper to understand the real-life impact of these policies and why we must hold our leaders accountable.

I believe we witnessed our city’s credibility traded for a presidential pat on the back.
