Person of Interest

This is not a formal legal term but a common phrase used by police and media. It generally means authorities believe you may have useful information about a crime or could be connected in some way. You are not yet accused of wrongdoing, but police want to question you to gather details.

Risk: This status can quickly shift to suspect if new evidence emerges. Anything you say without counsel can be used against you later.

Suspect

Police have reasonable grounds (based on evidence) to believe you may have committed a crime. This is more serious than person of interest. Investigators focus on building a case against you. Target (Common in Federal Investigations)
