It may come as a surprise to learn how much I enjoy the month of July (especially since I live in South Texas and it is really hot). My love for July is powered in party by the fact that the Tour de France spans the majority of the month. There are so many things to enjoy about the Tour.
For one thing, the cyclists are really fast, and it is incredible to see how quickly they can climb mountains (and safely descend them). The attacks and strategy are fascinating and the competitions within the competition are hard to beat. Although only a few of the nearly two hundred riders stand a chance to wear the yellow jersey, there are so many other things to compete for. Riders compete for stage wins, and each stage presents its own set of challenges that some riders fare better at facing. Time trials, mountains, sprint stages, and mountain stages with sprint-style finishes are just a few of the options.
I am a little embarrassed to admit it but the drama is interesting. Will your favorite sprinter finish this mountain stage within the time cutoff? The cutoff is a moving target determined by the time it takes the first rider to finish the stage, by the way. Will a rider come back from an accident arguably caused by another rider? Will a rider fall in line and help his teammate who stands a better chance of winning the stage and/or the Tour?
Lastly, I love learning more about the history and geography of France, and beyond. Les vues sont incroyables.
