It may come as a surprise to learn how much I enjoy the month of July (especially since I live in South Texas and it is really hot). My love for July is powered in party by the fact that the Tour de France spans the majority of the month. There are so many things to enjoy about the Tour.

For one thing, the cyclists are really fast, and it is incredible to see how quickly they can climb mountains (and safely descend them). The attacks and strategy are fascinating and the competitions within the competition are hard to beat. Although only a few of the nearly two hundred riders stand a chance to wear the yellow jersey, there are so many other things to compete for. Riders compete for stage wins, and each stage presents its own set of challenges that some riders fare better at facing. Time trials, mountains, sprint stages, and mountain stages with sprint-style finishes are just a few of the options.

I am a little embarrassed to admit it but the drama is interesting. Will your favorite sprinter finish this mountain stage within the time cutoff? The cutoff is a moving target determined by the time it takes the first rider to finish the stage, by the way. Will a rider come back from an accident arguably caused by another rider? Will a rider fall in line and help his teammate who stands a better chance of winning the stage and/or the Tour?

Lastly, I love learning more about the history and geography of France, and beyond. Les vues sont incroyables.

In this first installment of Leo's Brand Spotlight, we wish to spotlight one of Leo's favorite brands--one that he enjoys at least twice a day. That brand is no other than NutriSource.

We were introduced to NutriSource by our dog trainer. We have not been disappointed. Leo is in great health, as verified by our veterinarian. All NutriSource formulas (more than 60) deliver compact nutrition and include prebiotics and probiotics to help support a healthy gut.

NutriSource is "a family owned and operated company that delivers daily on [its] core beliefs: People, Quality, Spirit and Moxie, Tradition, and Community." Consistent with these core beliefs is NutriSource's decision to limit its distribution to independent pet specialty stores.

Do you have any fond memories of NutriSource or its related brands?

I really enjoy flying with Delta Air Lines. Perhaps my perspective is influenced by the fact that our family routinely travels to Atlanta. I find that Delta provides excellent service, from booking to baggage retrieval. The in-flight experience is great. I always feel like I am a member of the Delta family.

My appreciation for Delta grew when Cary Milliner recently told me about the Delta Flight Museum. https://lnkd.in/dzx7ixH2. I visited with family before returning to SA. At the museum, you have the opportunity to walk through several planes, including a Boeing 747. Wow!

Delta's history is fascinating. As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about names and logos, I thought the following facts were especially interesting: "The name 'Delta' comes from the Mississippi Delta region, the principal area of operations for Delta Air Service in 1928, when it formed out of crop-dusting company Huff Daland Dusters of Monroe, Louisiana." "Delta's advertising department invested values into each of the logo's colors of red, white and blue and its strong triangle shape:
'The blue portion points to the sky where we fly—the point represents the pinnacle of professional achievement. The swept wing of the jet is represented by the broad white "V." The flat broad base suggests Delta's solid foundation. Colored red, it can be regarded not only as the exhaust behind the jet but also the flame of leadership that keeps the point headed upward.'"

Tomorrow marks the eightieth anniversary of The Normandy landings. The Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II, codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day is the largest seaborne invasion in history.

I would like to recognize a brand whose origins go back to WWII and its support of the Allied Forces. According to Johnson & Johnson, "[Duct] tape was invented by...Vesta Stoudt who wanted to save soldiers’ lives in World War II....She noticed that the boxes of ammunition she was packing and inspecting had a flaw....They were sealed with paper tape, with a tab to open them. Workers then dipped the entire box in wax to make it waterproof. But the paper tape was very thin, and the tabs often tore off, leaving soldiers frantically trying to open the box while under fire."

Stoudt set out to create a waterproof cloth tape to seal the boxes. She wrote a letter to then President Roosevelt outlining the problem and her solution.

President Roosevelt was impressed and passed the letter on to the War Production Board. The Board asked the Industrial Tape Corporation—then a Johnson & Johnson operating company—to make the product.

“The military called the waterproof, cloth-backed, green tape 100-mile-per-hour tape, ... because they could use it to fix anything, from fenders on jeeps to boots.”

I have benefited from Duct Tape on numerous occasions. Until today, I was not aware of its historical significance and impact. I now have a greater appreciation.

Half Price Books is one of my favorite stores. I have many memories of visiting Half Price Books around San Antonio. Perhaps their proximity to my home and places of work was tough on my wallet at times. That said, my dollar goes further and my books get a second life when I sell them back.

I was sad to see the Half Price Books on Broadway leave. I will continue to visit other HPB locations and hope the tenant at that space brings as much character and joy to our neighborhood as its predecessor.

The Pulitzer Prizes are annual awards administered by Columbia University for achievements in the United States in "journalism, arts and letters." They were established in 1917 by Joseph Pulitzer, who was a successful newspaper publisher.

One of my 2024 goals is to read each of the winning books for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. As of Monday, there are now ninety-eight winners, and I have read fifty-two of them. These works are treasures. It is amazing how they capture the human condition at different times and places in U.S. history.

Here is a link to the list of prior winners. Which is your favorite? https://lnkd.in/gHuGjW_Z

As you already know, I love Fiesta! It brings our community together, and we have a lot of fun. Recovering this week from so many events has been nice. I would be remiss, however, to finish this series of Fiesta-themed Brand Spotlights without featuring my favorite Fiesta event, the Fiesta Flambeau Parade.

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade, also known as America’s Largest Illuminated Night Parade, consists of over 200 parade entries that "travel through beautiful and historic downtown San Antonio. It is viewed by over 750,000 street spectators along a 2.6-mile parade route." It "is considered the premier event of the 11 days of Fiesta San Antonio."

I was invited to march in the parade with my alma mater, St. Mary's University, last weekend. A link to the video is in the comments below.

NIOSA is one of my favorite Fiesta events. It spans four nights and celebrates our city's diverse cultural legacy and historic preservation. San Antonio is more than 300 years old, and we enjoy architecture spanning centuries to remind us of our past.

If you have time this week, stop by La Villita and have some fun. You can find me waiting in line for a beignet or chicken-on-a-stick!

Let's Fiesta San Antonio! There is so much to celebrate and enjoy over the next two weeks--from cascarones to chicken-on-a-stick--and most importantly, family and friends. Let's start our Fiesta series of Brand Spotlights with a celebration of Fiesta. For those unfamiliar with Fiesta, check out the page linked below.

I try to capture my experiences while exploring. Although traditional cameras often suffice, they are frequently too big, fragile, and inefficient for certain moments. In anticipation of a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, my parents gifted me a GoPro camera. It was wonderful. I used it while diving with sharks and other marine life. I used it throughout that trip and I still use it. I love that it is compact, durable, and easy to use.

Some might struggle to get excited about energy. I don’t. There are some great energy companies located here in Texas. I want to brag on Valero for a moment. Valero is extremely supportive of our community and provides many jobs to friends and colleagues.

Additionally, I always enjoy watching the Dot Races during timeouts at Spurs games. For what it is worth, the red dot always wins. At least I think it does.

Have you fueled up with Valero during a favorite road trip?

I am honored and excited to embark on my final campaign for the San Antonio Bar Association Board of Directors. The last six years have flown by and the Association has accomplished great things. I look forward to the next three (as your President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past President) and leading the Association to new heights.

I regularly meet with members of the bar to hear ideas, goals, and criticisms. I want to hear your voice. SABA is not an organization of one; it is an organization of many. Please share your ideas and stay in touch so that we can grow it together.

Voting starts next week.
