Burnita Shelton Matthews became the first woman to serve as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Appointed by President Harry Truman in 1949, she presided over several major trials.

While studying law at National University School of Law, Matthews became involved with the suffragist National Woman’s Party (NWP) as a researcher and later as the head of its legal research department.

At the NWP, Matthews helped draft the original version of the Equal Rights Amendment and was involved with the organization’s efforts to secure its passage.

In 1910, Lyda Burton Conley became the first Native American female lawyer in America.

Her motivations were pure; she taught herself the law to protect her tribe’s cemetery burial land located in Huron Park Indian Cemetery from being sold. Unfortunately, she lost her case, and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to rehear it.

However, Conley had raised enough public support through her efforts that the House of Representatives Indian Affairs committee finally banned desecration of the cemetery in 1912.

Belva Lockwood was the first woman to run for US President and one of the earliest female attorneys.

Despite being denied a diploma and barred from the bar, she petitioned for legislation allowing qualified women to be admitted to the bar, which was signed into law in 1879.

In 1880, she became the first woman to argue before the US Supreme Court. Lockwood ran for president in 1884 and 1888 as part of the Equal Rights Party.

Charlotte E. Ray became the first African-American woman to graduate from a law school, and the first to formally practice law in the United States.

Ray simultaneously taught and attended law school at Howard University, graduating in 1872. She was admitted to the District of Columbia bar, becoming one of the first women of any race to practice law in the District.

In 1875 Ray agreed to take a divorce case on appeal to the District of Columbia’s Supreme Court for Martha Gadley,an African American woman who petitioned for divorce from an abusive husband. Ray successfully overturned the lower court’s ruling by arguing that the husband’s habitual drunkenness and extreme violence endangered his wife’s life and entitled her to a divorce.

Historically, women faced significant barriers when attempting to enter the legal profession. Charlotte E. Ray’s persistence was used as precedent for female lawyers in other states to gain admission to their bars.
