Gov. Spencer J. Cox today announced the appointments of Jay T. Jorgensen and Stephen P. Dent to serve on the Utah Supreme Court.

The appointments follow legislation passed earlier this year expanding the Utah Supreme Court from five to seven justices. The two new seats were created as part of the state’s ongoing work to support the judiciary and ensure the Court can continue to provide careful, timely review in cases of statewide importance.

Another Wills for Heroes event successfully helped approximately 60 people with estate planning and living will documents, thanks to the volunteer efforts of Utah Young Lawyers. First responders, veterans, and their spouses were able to leave with notarized documents on Saturday from the Park City Police Department, which served as the clinic location. Thank you to PCPD and pro bono services from attorneys and other legal professionals, including law students. And, special thanks to all of those who dedicate their lives to serving others and this country.

Who decides how sentences are set in Utah? It’s a shared process designed to promote fairness and consistency:

• The Legislature writes the laws and sentencing ranges.

• The Utah Sentencing Commission develops sentencing guidelines.

• Judges apply the law and guidelines to the facts of each case.

This system of checks and balances helps ensure informed, fair, and transparent sentencing decisions.

The Utah Judicial Nominating Commission is accepting applications for multiple judicial vacancies across the state, including two positions on the Utah Supreme Court and one position on the Third District Court.

The Supreme Court vacancies result from the retirement of Chief Justice Matthew B. Durrant, effective August 31, 2026, and the resignation of Justice Diana Hagen, effective May 8, 2026. Applications for the Hagen vacancy are due June 12, 2026, and applications for the Durrant vacancy are due June 26, 2026. Applicants for both Supreme Court positions must submit a completed application, a legal writing sample, and a two-page essay describing their judicial philosophy.

Applications are also being accepted for a Third District Court judgeship serving Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele counties. This vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills, effective December 1, 2026. Applications are due June 22, 2026.
