Exposure to crystalline silica dust during the cutting, polishing, or fabrication of stone countertops, particularly engineered quartz, can cause serious lung diseases, including silicosis.

The Rainbow Room in Stranger Things is based on a real psychiatric facility, and there are still real-life psychiatric facilities in North Carolina where children are being abused and neglected.

PFAS continue to be an important environmental issue across North Carolina.
Earlier this month, Chemours, DuPont and Corteva reached a settlement with the State of North Carolina and 11 local entities involving PFAS and other historical discharges associated with the Fayetteville Works facility. The agreement includes $455 million in payments over 15 years, along with a separate $135 million reserve fund connected to Chemours’ existing obligations.

Closer to home, Salisbury-Rowan Utilities has reported encouraging local results. According to its 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report and published PFAS testing information, SRU tested finished drinking water for PFAS in October 2023 and January 2024, and none of the PFAS compounds tested for were detected.

PFAS concerns continue to affect communities across North Carolina, making it important to stay informed about both statewide developments and local water quality.
