"An immigration judge in Charlotte, North Carolina, recently ordered the deportation of a young man who was killed in 2024, citing his failure to appear in court.

Judge Amy Lee ordered the removal of Levi Mendez-Maldonado in absentia on 21 May. Mendez-Maldonado, originally from Honduras, came to the United States as an unaccompanied minor at age 17 and was murdered in a shooting in November 2024."

North Carolina judge said Levi Mendez-Maldonado failed to show up in court – even after being told he had died in 2024

A surge in fraud targeting immigrants has overwhelmed legal aid organizations and doubled federal complaint filings. The Federal Trade Commission, responsible for consumer protection, said the reported scams more than doubled, from 613 in 2023 to 1,291 in 2024. It got worse in 2025, with almost 2,000 complaints and at least $94.4 million stolen from immigrants. Experts say the number could be even higher as many immigrants don't report scams out of fear of being deported. With increased immigration enforcement, shifting immigration policies and heightened rhetoric targeting immigrants, the current political climate has made immigrants especially vulnerable to these scams, said Magdalena Barbosa, director of legal services for the Diocese of Brooklyn-based Catholic Migration Services.

A surge in immigration fraud has overwhelmed legal aid organizations, doubled federal complaint filings, and, in at least one documented case, led directly to deportation.

In late January, the Trump administration was planning a war with Iran. Around that time, government officials deported 18 people to Iran, the last of them arriving just before U.S. and Israeli bombs began falling across the country. In the 13 months since the second Trump administration's beginning until the beginning of the war in Iran, the United States deported more than 200 people to Iran, while the State Department warned U.S. citizens not to travel there and decried human rights violations happening in the country. Additionally, the U.S. government deported more than 21,000 people to other countries that the State Department deemed too dangerous to visit, from President Trump's inauguration to mid-March, according to a Marshall Project analysis of ICE data. The overwhelming majority of these immigrants had no criminal records and at least 600 were children

Trump’s State Department told Americans to avoid Iran, Venezuela, Ukraine, South Sudan and other nations where the U.S. simultaneously deported people.

Most Americans broadly oppose Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents patrolling U.S. stadiums during this summer's World Cup, according to a nationwide Washington Post-University of Maryland poll, a sign of public resistance to making immigration enforcement visible at the global soccer showcase. About 65 percent oppose ICE agents stationed at stadiums during the tournament which will be played in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. More than 70 percent of Republicans support the idea, while more than 70 percent of independents and more than 90 percent of Democrats oppose it. ICE's role has emerged as one of the most scrutinized — and least transparent — issues in the lead up to the World Cup, which begins June 11 and will feature 48 countries and 104 matches.

A Washington Post-University of Maryland poll also finds broad support for allowing Iran’s team to play in the United States.

The almost 50 U.S. embassies and consulates that are currently processing visa applications will be reduced to 20 in the coming weeks, according to three U.S. officials and an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press. The move is part of the Trump administration's ongoing effort to crack down on issuing both immigrant and non-immigrant visas as part of its broader aim to limit overall immigration to the United States. The administration also has scaled back U.S. personnel at embassies and consulates around the world.

The State Department plans to slash the number of U.S. embassies and consulates in Africa that can process visas for foreigners seeking to come to the United States.

The Trump administration is developing a plan that would allow immigration officials to quickly reject some asylum applications without interviewing the applicants, according to internal federal documents. The regulation described in the documents would be another effort by the administration to tighten access to the asylum system, which Trump administration officials claim is plagued by systematic fraud. Under the regulation, asylum applications could be rejected — without the traditional interview — if the case was filed a year after the applicant arrived in the United States. The applicant would then face deportation proceedings. U.S. immigration law generally disqualifies foreigners who apply a year after arrival but there are exceptions for serious medical conditions or poor legal counsel. Unaccompanied minors also are not covered by the deadline.

The regulation, described in internal documents obtained by CBS News, would be the latest effort by President Trump's White House to tighten access to the U.S. asylum system.

Federal immigration agencies increasingly send detained immigrants all over the country with little warning, leaving families and attorneys unsure where they are currently located. As one example, for about five days in December, Abdullahi Mohamed seemingly vanished into the immigration detention system. After Immigration and Customs Enforcement held him for seven weeks in Massachusetts, without warning it began moving him repeatedly around the country, faster than his family could keep up with. Repeated transfers like this can block people like him from speaking with attorneys and make it difficult to file legal petitions in the right jurisdictions, while distressing families, Abdullahi Mohamed's attorney said. "This is cruelty," the attorney wrote. Lawyers say this has also significantly undermined due process protections.

Under Trump, the U.S. increasingly sends immigrants all over the nation with little warning, leaving families and attorneys unsure where they are.

Four detainees at Camp East Montana — the largest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in the United States — filed a federal lawsuit on Saturday alleging human rights abuses, "horrific" conditions, and "severe medical neglect" at the facility. The suit describes a litany of abuse allegations, including a lack of medical care and physical violence at the hands of guards, and accuses the government of human rights and constitutional violations. "No human being should ever have to go through this. I have already experienced torture in my home country of Cameroon and I never thought I would experience such severely violent treatment by guards here in the United States of America," said Gerald Akari Angye, one of the named plaintiffs detained at the facility.
