Big Update: What You Need to Know About the New DHS Registration Rule (Form G-325R)
If you're living in the United States as a noncitizen, there’s an important update you should know about.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now enforcing an old immigration rule in a new way — and it could affect you or someone you know.
Certain noncitizens are now required to register with the U.S. government by filing a new form called Form G-325R. But don't panic — if you already have certain immigration documents, you’re probably already registered and don’t need to do anything extra!
Let’s break it down in simple terms:
What is Form G-325R?
Form G-325R is a new registration form rolled out by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
It collects basic biographic information (like your name, address, and background details) to make sure DHS has accurate records of everyone living in the U.S. without citizenship.
👉 If you need to file it, you’ll have to do it online by creating a USCIS account.
Who Needs to File Form G-325R?
You may need to file if:
You’re a noncitizen age 14 or older
You haven’t already provided fingerprints or registered through other immigration processes
Parents can (and should) file on behalf of children under 14.
If you already have certain immigration documents or went through certain processes, you’ve already met the registration requirement. You do NOT need to file if you fall into one of these categories:
✅ You’re a Green Card holder (lawful permanent resident)
✅ You were paroled into the U.S. under special conditions (INA 212(d)(5)) — even if your parole has expired
✅ You were issued an I-94 or I-94W when you entered the U.S. (even if it’s expired)
✅ You had an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa before you last arrived in the U.S.
✅ DHS started removal proceedings against you (you have a Form I-862 or I-863)
✅ You were issued an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) (Form I-765)
✅ You applied for a Green Card using Forms I-485, I-687, I-698, or I-700, and gave fingerprints — even if the application was denied
✅ You have a Border Crossing Card (like Form I-186)
✅ You have a valid, unexpired DHS stamp in your foreign passport
✅ You have a Form I-557 (temporary proof of Green Card status)
Why This Matters
Here’s the serious part:
If you’re required to register and don’t, you could face:
Fines up to $5,000
Up to six months in jail
Possible removal or deportation
Plus, all noncitizens are required to carry proof of registration at all times.
Not having it can lead to even more problems.
