There comes a moment in many relationships where the partnership is no longer viable, and where separation or divorce is the unavoidable next step. And while divorcing or going separate ways is rarely easy, couples dissolving their households during Covid-19 are facing new woes.

Divorce or separation is rarely easy, but couples dissolving their households during Covid-19 are facing new woes -- the stress of job losses, shared housing, co-parenting and health insurance worries in a global pandemic.

In celebration of Pro Bono Week, CLP would like to highlight one of its Pro Bono Heroes, Attorney Brandon Fortuno!

Brandon Fortuno worked in Law Enforcement through his twenties before law school. While attending Stetson University College of Law part-time for his J.D. and LL.M., he created his own company and worked as a private investigator. In January of 2019, he started Fortuno Law PLLC, focusing primarily on family law. With his focus on family law, volunteering with CLP in the family law clinic was a natural fit.

Brandon enjoys the opportunity to help pro se litigants who aren't able to afford representation. As a firm owner, he is regularly confronted with the business realities of having to choose which prospective clients to accept. Sometimes these decisions cut against his desire to help everyone who can't afford full representation. Brandon says, “Doing pro bono through the CLP clinics allows me to help these litigants in my spare time without overextending my firm.”

Brandon believes in pro bono work and hopes to encourage other lawyers to volunteer, in his own words, he says: “I'd encourage attorneys who haven't tried the clinics yet to at least volunteer for a single session. I think they'd find that many pro se litigants can be helped tremendously just by the 45 minutes spent listening to their legal problem, identifying the applicable issues at play, and pointing them to the right sources for information and forms. Their questions usually stem from a general lack of understanding about the processes applicable to them, and a few minutes with an attorney can save them hours of stumbling around online.”

One silver lining about the pandemic is that it has made it much easier for volunteer attorneys to participate in our advice clinics in that all of our clinics are conducted remotely so that attorneys like Brandon don’t even have to leave the comforts of their homes or office.

To sign up for a virtual clinic, please email Jamal Mosley at [email protected].
