Think disability qualification rules change depending on what state you live in? For SSDI and SSI, they don’t.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) use the same federal qualification standards in all 50 states. Your local Social Security office may change, but the rules used to evaluate whether you qualify do not.

What does vary by state is short-term disability coverage. California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island require short-term disability insurance, while other states may offer different programs or leave coverage up to employers and private insurers.

So whether you live in Florida, Texas, Ohio, California, or anywhere else, your SSDI or SSI claim is evaluated under the same federal standards.

Social Security update: The SSA has added 14 conditions to its Compassionate Allowances list, bringing the total to 314.

Compassionate Allowances help Social Security quickly identify disability claims involving certain serious diseases and medical conditions that meet its disability standards, allowing qualifying claims to move through the determination process faster.

The update was announced on August 11. We keep a close eye on changes at Social Security because updates like these can matter for people applying for disability benefits.

91 years ago today, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law.

It was August 14, 1935, and the country was still recovering from the Great Depression. The new law established the foundation for a Social Security system that would continue to evolve over the decades, eventually expanding to include disability benefits and other protections relied upon by millions of Americans.
