⚠️ Slips, Trips, and Falls: What’s Really Behind Most Injuries Related to Falling?
Slip and fall accidents are more common than you think. Some imagine a fall as harmless or even funny. But when a grandmother falls and breaks her hip 🩻, or your mom trips in a dark parking lot and suffers brain damage 🧠, that outlook changes fast. Here are the most common causes of slip and fall injuries:
Wet or Slippery Floors: Spills, leaks, or recently mopped surfaces are common causes of slips and falls. If the store was negligent and failed to warn customers of the wet area, they can be held liable.
Uneven Surfaces: Cracked walkways, loose mats, or broken tiles create hidden hazards in stores and businesses. If a place open to the public has an uneven surface issue and fails to address it, you may be able to sue them for compensation.
Poor Lighting: Dimly lit areas make it hard to see obstacles or uneven ground, especially in stairways and parking lots. A common scenario is a restaurant or store with a dark parking lot and tripping hazards like parking space backstops or potholes. These obstacles can create a legitimate negligence claim in poorly lit conditions.
Weather Conditions – Ice, snow, or rain often lead to slick walkways if not properly maintained. We don't have to worry so much about ice or snow in Florida, but rain is definitely a factor. You cannot hold a store liable for rain in the parking lot unless serious negligence is involved. However, rainwater being tracked into a store entrance with no non-slip mats or wet floor signs can be used as evidence to file a slip and fall injury claim.
Cluttered Walkways – Loose cords, debris, or, more commonly, objects left in pathways increase the risk of trip and fall events. This has seemingly been getting worse as more and more stores look to cut costs by stocking during store hours, causing a minefield of boxes and pallets in the walkways.
