ICYMI: Partner Megan Bonanni published an op-ed in The Detroit News discussing the abuse of children in autism treatment centers and the systemic failures that allow it to happen.

In her piece, Megan argues that children with autism are uniquely vulnerable precisely because many cannot verbally report what is happening to them. Stronger oversight, independent monitoring, and mandatory reporting enforcement are long overdue to help ensure their safety

“Children with disabilities deserve the same safety, dignity, and protection as any other child,” Megan said.

Pitt McGehee attorney Megan Bonanni is representing Morgan Dean, a Michigan mother who was secretly recorded along with her 2-year-old son in a changing room at the Rochester Goldfish Swim School by a now-convicted predator serving more than 35 years in prison.

Dean is speaking out publicly for the first time in the Detroit Free Press explaining why she filed a class action against Goldfish Swim School Franchising LLC: "I needed to know that something good was going to come out of this horrible nightmare. I need to make sure that Goldfish is held accountable, and is absolutely forced to make a change."

Pitt McGehee partner Megan Bonanni, who is representing Dean in a class action against Goldfish Swim School Franchising LLC, put it plainly: "Had they put even the most basic safety measures in place, this crime would have been avoided."

Megan Bonanni alongside Lisa Esser-Weidenfeller of Sommers Schwartz PC have filed a class action lawsuit against Goldfish Swim School in Rochester, Michigan, alleging the facility's negligence allowed children and their families to be secretly recorded in its changing rooms by now convicted doctor Oumair Aejaz. The suit joins a separate lawsuit already filed on behalf of three former employees who were also recorded at the same location.

"While Aejaz set up the secret camera, Goldfish Swim School created the environment that allowed this to happen," said Megan. "We are disappointed, but not surprised, that more people have been harmed by Goldfish's negligence. Aejaz is not the first person to commit this kind of crime, and he won't be the last, which is exactly why Goldfish must be held accountable so that no one else is given the opportunity to do this."
