The reports coming out of Austin this weekend are difficult to watch.

Multiple shootings. Lockdowns. Shelter-in-place alerts. Teenagers are allegedly involved. Families across the city are spending hours wondering whether their kids, neighborhoods, or schools are safe.

As a criminal defense attorney, cases like this are frustrating because you see the damage from every angle. Victims whose lives are permanently changed. Parents are blindsided by what their children have become involved in. Young people making decisions with consequences they are nowhere near mature enough to understand.

Many serious criminal cases do not begin with hardened criminals. They begin with immaturity, influence, social media, stolen fi****ms, stolen vehicles, group mentality, and teenagers chasing acceptance, status, or adrenaline without thinking about where it ends.
