NOT A SOLICITATION, LOOKING FOR FEEDBACK REGARDING LEGAL FEES: I was at an interesting conference regarding legal marketing. The jist of the presentation was that millenials like to do it themselves and want legal services to be fast, cheap, easy and in tandem with do-it-themselves. There was also a presentation of what they called unbundling of legal services; that is not providing soup to nuts representation , which is what my firm currently does.

Based on this I'm considering offering an option to my standard full service representation. It would be $1500 for a marriage based green card applicaiton, The client would bring in all of their forms already completed with copies of all of their documents. The $ 1500 would include a full consultaiton to review their case, a review of the forms with recommendations for what if anything they might need to change and a sample cover letter to package it and submit it to USCIS. I would do a letter to the client specifically limiting the scope of the representation to just those aspects of the representation. I'm also considering doing the same for a citizenship application for $ 1,000.

I'm interested in people's thoughts on this. As a Canadian is this an attractive option to hiring an attorney for a full representaiton? Again, please know this is not a solicitation, I'm just curious about people's thoughts on the concept? Thanks in advance.

THE IMMORAL NATURE OF IMMIGRATION IN THE US TODAY. Matter of A-C-M-, 27 I&N Dec. 303 (BIA 2018)

From a fellow immigration attorney: To all of my non-immigration lawyer family and friends: maybe you are sick of my posts but I honestly feel like it’s my moral duty to tell you what our government is doing to human beings in our names! Today, the Board of Immigration Appeals decided that a person who is a SLAVE of a terrorist organization - yes, a SLAVE - and who, as a slave, is FORCED to cook and clean for her terrorist captors, has provided them with “material support” and therefore, her application for asylum must be denied and she should be deported to the country where her terrorist slave owners are! Oh, and while she is being held by the terrorists, they make her husband dig his own grave and then they kill him, all while they forced her to watch! I want to scream! And, by the way, because this was the Board of Immgiration Appeals, that means that this is now the LAW for the whole country unless and until it is appealed and a higher court changes it!

GREEN CARDS FOR PARENTS, BROTHERS, SISTERS, AND ADULT CHILDREN OF U.S.

Just want to give everyone a heads up.

My expectation is that a new immigration bill will be passed at some point in the next few months. It appears likely that the new bill will eliminate the ability of a US citzen to file for a green card for their parents, brothers, sisters, or for adult children. If you have become a US citizen and want to file one of these petitions, I recommend that you do it now. Historically, when these changes come about they pertain to petitions filed on or after passage of the bill. Historically, petitions filed before the passage of the bill are grandfathered in and remain valid, although there are no guarantees of this.

If you think that at some point you will want to file one of these, do it now. At a minimum, file the I-130 ASAP so that hopefully they are grand-fathered and they are covered. If down the road, you decide not to go through with it, withdraw it at a later time.

There is no guarantee of what any new immigration law will do. However; the elimination of the ability of a US citizen to file for a parent, brother, sister, or adult child certainly looks like it is going to be eliminated.

Please don’t take this as legal advice, if you need that, talk to your lawyer, but be aware that changes are certainly in the air.

AIR FORCE ONE: Some things reinforce reality. As we were taking off from Palm Beach International, the pilot announced that if we looked off to our right, we could see Air Force One. Sure enough, there it was and it sunk in to me, that Trump really is the President. Still shocking to me.

I’m on the way to Seattle for a quick turnaround. Attending the citizenship interview for the now adult son of a former client. I started representing the family when the son was nine or ten. The son now has a Master’s degree and is an aeronautical engineer with Boeing. Under the current immgration proposals neither he, his college attending sister, nor his father would be allowed into the US. Encouraging immigrants like this hard working family from Africa “Continues to Make America Great”, not restricting immigration. Take that Air Force One.

TRUMP PROPOSAL FOR NEW IMMIGRATION LAW: The President and Georgia Senator Perdue have proposed a new immigration law. It slashes legal immigrants to the US by 50% ove the next 10 years. Priority goes to college educated, English speakers. Based on this version, not one of my four grand-parents would have been allowed to immigrate to the US. Having been an FBI Special Agent, having worked for the governmwmt for 30 years, and having operated my law practice for 16 years while currently employing 8 people, I think it was a good move to have admitted my grndparents. How about the rest of you? How many parents or grandparents would not have made the cut?
