David Mazie and Adam Epstein of Mazie Slater recently secured a $5 million settlement for the family of a child who suffered a permanent injury as a newborn.

Two days after he was born at a New Jersey hospital, the baby underwent a circumcision. As a result of the botched procedure, the child was left with a partial amputation and needed emergency reconstructive surgery at another hospital, which was successful.

Both physicians and the hospital admitted they were at fault prior to trial, and the parties reached the $5 million settlement on July 14, just as the trial team was preparing to deliver closing arguments.

This outcome was recently featured by the New Jersey Law Journal. Read the full article at the link in comments.

Mazie Slater Partner David Freeman recently obtained a $25.4 million judgment against major law firm Cooley, LLP for legal malpractice and breach of fiduciary duty.

Along with our co-counsel, David Howard of the Howard Law Firm, Mazie Slater has represented John Gregg for seven years of litigation and through trial against one of the country's largest law firms.

John Gregg founded pharmaceutical company Symbiomix Therapeutics. When he sought venture capital funding, Cooley represented both John and his company in the deal.

When John sought Cooley’s advice as to whether the venture capitalists’ proposal was a good deal, Cooley attorneys secretly exchanged emails commenting that the deal was “totally abusive” and John was getting “absolutely hosed” Cooley never communicated this to John.

As a result, John entered into the deal without knowledge as to how bad it really was. It was later discovered that Cooley secretly represented these same venture capitalists in other deals. After John entered into the deal with the venture capitalists, the venture capitalists took control of Symbiomix’s board of directors. However, just several months later, the venture capitalists decided to fire John with Cooley’s assistance.

Several years later, the Company was sold for $150 million. While the venture capitalists and other company insiders were handsomely rewarded from the sale, John received nothing. The jury voted unanimously 8-0 to hold Cooley accountable.

On September 29, 2025, best friends Isabella Salas and Maria Niotis were riding their bikes in Cranford, New Jersey. Having just started their senior year of high school, Isabella and Maria had their whole lives ahead of them. Their futures were taken from them when, according to police reports, they were struck and killed by a car driven by Vincent Battiloro.

Mazie Slater Partner Cory J. Rothbort, Esq., who represents Isabella’s Estate, recently told ABC7 Eyewitness News that Isabella had performed in theater since sixth grade and "had a beautiful voice." Isabella had hopes of studying performing arts in college and dreamed of becoming a music teacher. The Salas family’s message: Keep talking about Isabella and Maria, and continue to honor their memories.

This tragedy has received significant headlines, including recently, when it was revealed that the defendant, a minor at the time, would be charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder. Both families pushed for the case to be heard in adult court rather than sealed behind family court confidentiality.

The Salas family and our firm will continue to seek answers about this tragedy.

Mazie Slater Managing Partner David Mazie recently secured a $10.5 million medical malpractice settlement for the family of Brian Coven, a longtime Sills Cummis & Gross attorney who tragically died of lung cancer in 2024 at age 68.

In 2019 and again in 2020, doctors at Summit Medical Group ordered X-rays that showed infiltrates in Coven's lungs, a finding that can indicate cancer. Neither instance led to follow-up testing, and Coven was later diagnosed with cancer after experiencing unexplained weight loss.

Mazie represented Coven's estate against Summit Medical Group and four physicians involved in his care. A physician who testified on behalf of the estate said Coven had an 85% to 90% chance of survival if doctors had acted on the earlier signs of cancer.

This settlement was recently featured in the NJ.com and New Jersey Law Journal. Read the articles at the link in the comments.
