ABOUT THE REVOLUTIONISTS CAST

Wish a happy belated birthday to our Olympe de Gouges, Ashley Chitwood!

You may have seen Ashley on stage in "Noises Off" this past spring, Mrs. Potts in "Beauty and the Beast", and behind the director's chair for UACT productions like "PUFFS!", "All is Calm", and "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder".

From Ashley, here's a little bit about her character, Olympe de Gouges, in THE REVOLUTIONISTS:

"During the French Revolution, Olympe de Gouges supported a constitutional monarchy at first, and later criticized the radical leaders of the Revolution. She believed in freedom of speech and opposed violence and executions. During the Reign of Terror, she publicly criticized the government and called for a national vote to decide France's future. Because of her political writings and outspoken views, she was arrested in 1793. She was tried and executed by guillotine the same year.

Although she was silenced during her lifetime, Olympe de Gouges is now recognized as a pioneer of feminism and a brave defender of human rights. Her ideas were far ahead of her time, and today she is remembered as one of the first women to demand full equality between men and women."
