My personal opinion:
The murder of an 18 year old child working for minimum wage at WalMart was entirely
preventable.
Standard of Care. Involuntary Mental Health Hold. Illinois. Four floors above Swedish American ER is a locked pysch facility. ONLY FOR PATIENTS WITH PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE. The law requires a person who states they want to harm/kill themself or others to be hospitalized. Period.
The common practice at Swedes is to hold non-insured suicidal/homicidal patients in the ER under constant 1:1 supervision by a security guard, or CNA or tech until assessed by a non- physician mental health provider who is on-call from Rosecrance. They are called to come to the ER to assess and screen mental
health patients for active suicidal and/or homicidal intent. No psychiatrists evaluate ER patients in the ER. Why? $$$
The ER physicians, who may or may not be Swedish American employees have a duty to oversee the screening and make the FINAL decision on whether psychiatric hold is required to protect the patient or the public.
If a psychiatric admission is required, the ER staff must take on the very difficult time consuming task of finding a pysch bed in another Illinois city. If accepted, the patient is sent by ambulance. After Singer closed and we no longer have ANY facility in Winnebago county
for inpatient psychiatric treatment for mentally ill patients with public aide or government funded health insurance.
When he came in saying he wanted to kill someone the medical decision would have been to legally deprive him
of his liberty. Under ER protocol, his clothes and property would have beentaken and secured while he was held in the ER under supervision. Routine protocol. Standard of care.
Question: How did he end up in WalMart with a deadly weapon in
his hand? Because he was cured? Bu****it. He went from being under constant watch in the ER to being medically cleared and discharged and allowed to leave with no restrictions. A clinical
decision was made that he was not a threat to himself or others, Am I the only citizen of this county that sees how foolhardy and stupid this was?
Laced pot ? Hmm. What is the evidence? Want to place a wager of whether a urine toxicology was even done?
Disclaimer:
I am not offering the opinion as a lawyer, or a nurse with a Master’s degree and decades as an ER nurse. I am a logical human being who is angry, livid, disgusted and terribly sad about the lack of mental health services provided to a man suffering a mental health crisis? Why wasn’t he held under the authority of Illinois law? Did he say, okay I am all better and won’t kill anyone?
God bless his family.
