High on Mount Everest, where the air is thin and every step can mean life or demise, 24-year-old Nadav Ben-Yehuda was close to achieving his dream. He was just 300 meters from the summit, about to become the youngest Israeli to reach the top.

Then he saw someone lying in the snow.

It was Aydin Irmak, a Turkish climber Nadav had met earlier at base camp. Aydin was unconscious, without gloves or oxygen, and close to demise. Many climbers had already passed him, too tired or focused on reaching the summit to stop.

Nadav made a hard choice. He gave up his dream of the summit and stayed with Aydin. For nine long hours, he helped carry him down the dangerous mountain in freezing temperatures.

Both men suffered frostbite, but they survived. Doctors later said Aydin would have passed away without help. On the world’s highest mountain, Nadav chose humanity over ambition.
