Rochester’s neighborhoods are filled with architecture that tells the story of our city, one home at a time. 🏡

We’re taking a closer look at some of the architectural styles that help define our area, starting with the unmistakable character of Tudor Revival.

From steep gabled roofs and decorative half-timbering to leaded glass and arched doorways, these homes are some of Rochester’s most distinctive.

There seems to be no shortage of news these days reminding us of the things that divide us.

That’s why we found this story not only heartwarming, but hopeful.

Today, Brighton, New York and Brighton, Ontario are formalizing a friendship between their two communities—two towns on opposite sides of Lake Ontario simply deciding that they’d like to know one another better.

Brighton is also home to Elysian Homes, which makes today’s signing feel particularly special to us.

We’re grateful to Brighton Town Supervisor Bill Moehle and Brighton, Ontario Mayor Brian Ostrander for recognizing the value of creating this relationship—and then actually making it happen.

Of course, a friendship between two towns isn’t going to resolve the disagreements between the United States and Canada. Nor is it going to settle the question of whether Lake Ontario should suddenly be called something else.

But that doesn’t make it insignificant.

There is real strength in friendship. There is strength in sitting across a table from someone and getting to know them. In visiting their community and welcoming them into yours. In discovering that the people on the other side of a border really aren’t very different from us.

We spend an extraordinary amount of energy identifying the things that separate us. Our politics. Our countries. Our beliefs. Our disagreements.

These two towns are doing something different.

They’re reaching toward one another.

Perhaps diplomacy doesn’t always have to take place between presidents and prime ministers. Perhaps there is another kind—the personal diplomacy that takes place between communities, neighbors and, ultimately, people.

Lake Ontario sits between these two Brightons.

But a lake doesn’t have to be something that separates us.

It can also be the thing that connects us.

We’re proud to call Brighton home—and particularly proud today that our town chose to create a bridge.

Rochester has reclaimed its position as the #1 housing market in the country.

While inventory is growing and homes are sitting longer nationally, Rochester continues to be an outlier.

But a strong market doesn’t mean every home will see the same results...
