Estate Planning Tip: Insuring against risk is a very important element of estate planning. I am an attorney and do not sell insurance, so be assured, I am not trying to profit from this post.

Life insurance is extremely important if your family would suffer economically in the event of your death. I am hearing of way too many deaths of people with young children. In some cases, the family has to solicit donations for burial or cremation, which breaks my heart.

Term insurance is relatively cheap. There are many excellent companies that offer good policies at reasonable prices. If you have a grown child with a family, it would be a good idea to encourage him or her to be prepared for tragedy. If your own family would struggle paying bills and debts or financing educations for your children, please talk to your financial advisor or insurance agent about term life insurance.

Is your will up to date? Do you need a revocable living trust? Have you executed a medical power of attorney? Have you put in writing your wishes in the case you are being kept alive by machines when there is no hope of recovery? If you have questions, give me a call.

While sheltering in place, why not use the time to do your estate planning? Everyone needs a Will, Durable Power of Attorney, and health care directives. A revocable living trust also is a good tool for use in certain situations. While I prefer in-person meetings with new clients, I will be glad to meet via Zoom or Facetime.
