I don't think the advice in this article is anywhere near complete, but it is good short term advice for the scenario presented. Of course, I think the individual should talk to a lawyer. Short read, and I like that the author goes to recognizing the role of grief in the estate process early in his response:

‘There are four daughters. I paid the house off for my parents seven years ago and have paid the taxes each year since then.’
