Just in: JB Pritzker has signed the Illinois Speed Limiter and Vehicle Tracking legislation into law.

The legislation will require the installation of a device that is designed to slow down your vehicle you if you exceed the posted speed limit, while at the same time utilizing GPS to track the whereabouts of your vehicle and report the data to the state of Illinois in real time.

The devices that will be installed are referred to “Intelligent speed assistance” (ISA) devices.

Individuals who are accused of exceeding the speed limit twice in a one year period may be required to install this device in their car or truck as punishment. it will also apply to individuals who are accused of “reckless driving“.

Timing: the provisions of the law will take place starting January 1, 2028

Critics say the law goes beyond traditional penalties by requiring technology that uses GPS and other systems to monitor a vehicle’s speed and location. They also object to the device’s ability to actively limit a vehicle’s speed, saying it gives the government unprecedented control over private vehicles.

Cost: the state is looking to generate income as a result of the law, individuals will be responsible for monthly monitoring costs, estimated at approximately $30 per month. The money would go into the state coffers, the state initially will generate several million dollars annually from the program

The legislation, HB 4948, was signed into lot this week by the governor
