Tip for First Responders: Keep Personal and Work Devices Separate

In today’s digital world, one small mistake can complicate an investigation. A simple protective habit is:

✨ Avoid using your personal phone for work-related communication.

Why this matters:
🔹 Personal devices can be subject to subpoenas
🔹 Texts or photos on your phone may become discoverable
🔹 Mixing personal/work messages can create policy issues
🔹 Using the approved work platform protects your privacy
🔹 It reduces misunderstandings and keeps your chain of command informed

This quick boundary can make a big difference if a call, report, or incident is later reviewed.

If you ever find yourself facing a request for your personal device or unsure what’s discoverable, Harper & McCoy can guide you through the process and protect your rights.

Leadership Isn’t a Rank. It’s a Habit.
Whether you’re new in the field or a seasoned supervisor, leadership shows up in the small choices you make every day. One of the strongest habits you can build is this:
✨ Lead by example, even when no one is watching.
For first responders, that looks like:
🔹 Backing up your team without being asked
🔹 Maintaining professionalism during stressful calls
🔹 Owning mistakes and fixing them quickly
🔹 Treating the public, and your partners, with respect
🔹 Keeping your gear, reports, and training squared away
🔹 Modeling calm when situations get chaotic
Strong leadership strengthens morale, reduces conflict, and protects the integrity of your agency, qualities that matter now more than ever.
If you’re facing leadership challenges, workplace conflict, or questions about supervisory responsibilities, Harper & McCoy is here to support you.

Keep Your Training File Updated Before Year-End

As the year wraps up, now is the perfect time for first responders to review and update their training and qualification records. This isn’t just administrative housekeeping, it can make a major difference in promotions, assignments, and even disciplinary matters.

Here’s your reminder:

✨ Update your training file before January.

Include:
• Courses completed in 2025
• Certifications earned or renewed
• Fi****ms qualifications
• Specialized skills (FTO, EVOC, Crisis Intervention, etc.)
• Outside training from conferences or PORAC classes
• Commendations or letters of appreciation

Why it matters:
🔹 Accurate records strengthen promotion packets
🔹 Training gaps can be used against you in IA or civil cases
🔹 Updated certifications protect your credibility and career trajectory
🔹 You avoid last-minute scrambles during annual audits

A well-maintained training file is one of the best professional tools a peace officer or correctional supervisor can have.

If you have questions about how training records impact administrative investigations or promotions, Harper & McCoy is here to help.

Protect Yourself by Staying Off Social Media During Critical Incidents

In today’s environment, what you post, or even “like”, on social media can become part of an investigation. During high-stress events or critical incidents, maintaining tight professional boundaries online is essential.

Here’s your reminder:

✨ Avoid posting, commenting, or reacting to content about active incidents.
Even supportive or general comments can be misunderstood or used out of context.

Why it matters:
• Comments can surface during IA investigations
• Social media activity may be reviewed in civil or administrative cases
• Posts can impact credibility in witness statements or reports
• Agencies often have strict policies that trigger discipline

Staying silent online protects you, your agency, and the integrity of the investigation.

If you’ve encountered a social media issue at work or have questions about what is safe to post, Harper & McCoy can help you navigate policy and protect your career.

Know Your Rights: Preparing for an Internal Affairs Interview

If you’re a peace officer or correctional supervisor, an Internal Affairs interview can feel overwhelming, especially during the busy holiday season. Remember: you have rights, and they matter.

Here are three essentials every first responder should know:

🔹 You have the right to representation.
You do not have to go into an IA interview alone. Ask for union or legal representation before answering questions.

🔹 You must be informed of the nature of the investigation.
You are entitled to understand what the interview is about before it begins.

🔹 You have the right to breaks, clarity, and respectful conduct.
Interviews must follow specific procedural rules. If something feels off, speak up.

Harper & McCoy has extensive experience representing first responders in administrative, disciplinary, and Internal Affairs matters.
If you’ve been notified of an interview, or think one may be coming ,we’re here to protect your rights and guide you through every step.

Co-Parenting Through the Holidays: Setting Expectations Early

The holidays can be magical but they can also create stress for families navigating shared custody or blended family schedules. One of the best ways to prevent conflict is to set clear expectations early in the month.

Here are three tips to help December run smoothly:

✨ Confirm your holiday parenting schedule now.
Review your order and communicate early to avoid last-minute misunderstandings.

✨ Plan holiday events in writing.
School plays, family gatherings, and travel dates should be shared ahead of time.

✨ Keep kids out of the conflict.
The goal is always to give them a peaceful, memorable holiday season.

If you need help reviewing your parenting plan, or modifying one for next year, our team is here to support you.
