Do you have a child at home who has turned 18, or a college student coming home for Spring Break?

Once your child turns 18, you no longer have authority to make healthcare decisions for them or automatic access to their medical records. I have clients with nightmare stories of their college-aged children in the hospital across the country with no access to information.

Ensure your young adult is protected by putting simple legal documents in place now.

A new client called and confessed that she was calling me during her weekly "SCARY HOUR."

Have you heard of this? Scary hour is when she sets a timer for one hour and works only on tasks she has been avoiding because of intimidation or overwhelm. Apparently, it is a productivity hack and trending on TikTok. I must admit that I love this idea, but hate that estate planning was on her scary hour list! Most of my scary hour would be devoted to home maintenance or improvement - finding a painter, cleaning the refrigerator and oven, organizing closets.... What's on your scary hour list?

*What's-on-my-desk-Wednesday!* Today, I am:

1. Updating a Northern Virginia client's estate plan with new fiduciaries,
2. Meeting with a prospective new estate planning client over Zoom,
3. Assisting a client finalize an estate's inventory filing for submission to the Henrico County Commissioner of Accounts, and
4. Sending an engagement letter to a prospective client setting forth my suggested estate plan to protect his legacy during life, and after death.

Happy Wednesday that feels like Tuesday!

P.S. How cute is this office?

🚨 REMINDER & ALERT: OWNERS OF CORPORATE ENTITIES!🚨
In 2024, there are new reporting requirements imposed by the Corporate Transparency Act as enforced by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Small companies are required to file a Beneficial Owners Information Report (BOIR). For existing companies, filing must occur no later than January 1, 2025. New companies formed during 2024 have 90 days to submit their initial filing, and new companies formed during 2025 will have 30 days to file its initial BOIR.

‼️ If business owners choose to ignore the new directive, they can face criminal fines up to $10,000 and jail time, and civil penalties of $591 per day. ‼️

Entities can complete their BOIR online at https://boiefiling.fincen.gov/.

This should be done as soon as possible, but no later than January 1, 2025, for all of your existing entities. If you have any questions, please let me know.

DAYS FIVE AND SIX -
On the 5th day of giving, I donated to fcrichmondrva. A friend's son's 15U soccer team is trying to get to Phoenix, Arizona to experience a milestone tournament. On any other day, I might have scrolled right past this request, but this month of giving inspired me to stop and donate to this nonprofit supporting youth soccer in Richmond! I hope this young man's team reaches its goal and they learn all of the positive lessons of competitive sports - hard work, teamwork, confidence, sportsmanship, respect, and humility.

Day Six's gift went to ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation! ASK has been supporting children with cancer and their families in Central Virginia for almost 50 years. It is also a fan favorite! Thank you Lauren Eanes Tucker, Yancey Norris Haas, and Britt Nelson Rayfield for suggesting this impactful nonprofit!

DAY FOUR’s gift goes to CASA of Central Virginia. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for children’s best interests. They stay with each case until it is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home.

Fun fact, I was on the board of Savannah Chatham CASA Volunteers as a young lawyer and saw what an impact these volunteers make on their communities.

Thank you, Ashley Thompson Zelenak for the suggestion to support such an amazing nonprofit!

DAY TWO's donation was given to Comfort Zone Camp, another amazing nonprofit supporting grief.

Comfort Zone Camp is a Richmond-based nonprofit bereavement organization that transforms the lives of children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, primary caregiver, or significant person. As of 2023, Comfort Zone Camp has provided services to 23,000 children and their families free of charge.

Thank you for all of your suggestions for great nonprofits - keep them coming!

The world feels heavy right now. And as the saying goes, I cannot do everything, but I can do something. I AM COMMITTING TO GIVING AWAY $10 A DAY, every day of November, to a different nonprofit and posting about each one. My mission is to "do something", bring awareness to some wonderful nonprofits, and maybe inspire others to "do something" too.

DAY ONE is Richmond-based Full Circle Grief Center. So many of my clients are overwhelmed with deep grief. FULL CIRCLE GRIEF CENTER provides support for grieving children, families, adults, and communities through support groups, individual counseling services, remembrance programs, and grief education support.

Please comment with your favorite nonprofits to add to my list this month!
