Christopher Pitera is a personal injury attorney at the law firm of Cannella & O'Neal. Chris represents persons who have been injured through no fault of their own in courts throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is an experienced, passionate, and effective attorney-advocate. To that end, he works tirelessly and zealously so that his clients can recover physically and financially. Prior to pr

acticing personal injury law, Chris was an Assistant Attorney General with the Virginia Attorney General's Office. In that capacity, he has tried numerous civil cases to verdict, settled hundreds more, and recovered millions of dollars for his clients. Chris also litigated and negotiated hundreds of medical lien reductions on behalf of MCV Hospital, so he understands the nuances of medical liens and how best to maximize recoveries for plaintiffs. Chris was specially appointed as the OAG Regulatory Coordinator under both Cuccinelli and Herring administrations where he was responsible for promulgating regulations affecting Virginians. Chris is a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Virginia State Bar - Young Lawyers Conference, Richmond Bar Association, and American Bar Association. He is Co-Chair of the Virginia State Bar YLC Professional Development Conference and Chair of the Richmond City No Bills Night featured on News 12. Outside of these legal commitments, Chris is a coach for the YMCA youth sports league, a member of his church, and provides many hours of pro bono legal services in his community. Chris received his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, where he graduated magna cm laude and a member of the prestigious Honors College. Before going to law school, Chris was a White House and Congressional intern. He went on to receive his law degree from Liberty University School of Law, where he was the Student Works Editor for the Liberty Legal Journal, member and traveling competitor of the Moot Court Board, Vice-Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Board, and elected among his peers as 2L Senator. He also received the distinguished Spirit of Liberty Award, an honor granted by the faculty to one graduating law student. Christopher resides in the greater Richmond area with his wife, Kate, daughter, Arabelle Reid, son, James Kingsley, and their dog Payton.

New Year, New Laws!

Starting tomorrow, January 1, 2025, Virginia’s minimum liability coverage limits will increase from $30,000/$60,000/$20,000 to $50,000/$100,000/$25,000 for policies effective on or after this date.

Here’s what the new auto insurance limits mean:

✅ $50,000 for bodily injury or death per person🧍‍♀️

✅ $100,000 for bodily injury or death per occurrence (more than one occupant) 👫

✅ $25,000 for property damage per accident 🚗💥🚙

Virginia law requires motorist to stop at the scene of an accident when there is property damage or bodily injuries.

This is a massive jury verdict, but the bigger story here is the $750,000 cap on non-economic damages (i.e., injuries in accordance to their degree and duration, pain, suffering, inconvenience, mental anguish, etc.). Despite a 9 million dollar verdict in favor of the injured party, most of that amount will be reduced by statute down to $750,000. Cap proponents say this prevents runaway verdicts. Cap opponents argue that caps only help big business interests and insurance companies pay less than full compensation to injured victims. What do you think?
