What happens if someone dies without a will?
Their property doesn't simply disappear, and the family doesn't necessarily get to decide among themselves who receives what.
State law determines how certain assets are distributed when someone dies without a valid estate plan.
That outcome may—or may not—look anything like what the person would have wanted.

Marriage, divorce, children, grandchildren, a new home, the death of a beneficiary, changes in finances, or even changes in relationships can make an older plan inconsistent with what you want today.
Creating an estate plan isn't necessarily a one-time event. Life changes. Your plan may need to change with it.

Leaving an inheritance to your adult children is one thing. Preparing them to receive it is another.
A significant inheritance can come with financial decisions, responsibilities and family expectations that someone may never have dealt with before.
Talking with adult children ahead of time can help them understand not only what they may inherit, but the thought and purpose behind the estate plan you've created.
