🔹 Hon. Florence Chamberlin, former U.S. Immigration Judge, brings nearly three decades of immigration law experience across the bench, private practice, and nonprofit leadership.

🔹 Chloe Dillon, Head of Criminal Immigration Defense at the San Mateo County Private Defender Program, served as an Immigration Judge in San Francisco from 2022 to 2025.

🔹 Gina Amato Lough, Directing Attorney of Immigrants' Rights at Public Counsel, received the 2024 California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (CLAY) Award.

Congratulations to the Honorable Rachel E. Holt and the Honorable Jeffrey R. Finigan! 🎉

The judges of the San Mateo County Superior Court have elected Judge Holt as Presiding Judge and Judge Finigan as Assistant Presiding Judge for 2027 and 2028.

Judge Holt has served as Assistant Presiding Judge since 2024 and previously as Family Law Supervising Judge. Judge Finigan has served on the bench since 2015, with leadership roles as Criminal Presiding Judge and Criminal Supervising Judge.

"I'll figure out my exit plan when I get closer." 🕰️

Every solo practitioner has said some version of this. It makes sense. Planning your departure feels strange when you're trying to grow.

But the work that makes a firm sellable is the same work that makes it easier to run today. Documented systems. Clients who know more than one person at the firm. Books you'd be comfortable showing someone.

Quick question: does your firm have a written policy on staff using AI tools? 🤔

If the answer is "we've talked about it," that's a no.

Most small firms don't run on policies. They run on habits. Someone started using a particular file-sharing service years ago, the paralegal texts clients from her personal phone, and nobody has ever said out loud whether it's okay to paste a draft motion into a chatbot.

Habits work fine (right up until they don't).

This month's Here-Say walks through building a firm-wide technology use policy covering the three places judgment calls happen daily: AI, client data, and mobile devices. It's about four to six pages of work, and it's the kind of thing that protects you before you need it.
