DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Who does this effect? What are the signs? The question in one’s mind that lingers and seems to be so stereotypical is: is she from a bad neighborhood? Is she from the wrong side of the tracks? Is it because she hangs around all the wrong people??? Victims can be both men and women, but most victims are more likely to be women.
The answer to all these questions is no. Victims can be of any race, age, s*x, culture religion, employment or marital status. This violence affects everyone and anyone it doesn’t matter where you are from or how much money you make or your social economic class. Generally violence in a relationship is used by one person to control the other. Partners may be married, unmarried, heteros*xual, gay or le***an, living together or dating. There is not one generality to this horrible disease. I call it a disease because the person living in a domestic violence relationship feels like they are dying or will die because it never seems to get better or change and they can’t seem to get out.
Violence can be explained in many ways:
Name Calling – put downs
Spitting
Choking
Withholding money
Keeping the other partner from family and friends
Stalking
Sexual assault
Intimidation
Violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.) s*xual abuse (unwanted or forced s*xual activity) Although emotional, psychological and financial abuse are not criminal behaviors, they are forms of abuse and can lead to criminal violence.
The violence takes many forms and can happen all the time or once in a while. An important step to help yourself or someone you know in preventing or stopping violence is recognizing the warning signs on the violence wheel.
