✍️ Difference Between a Texas Acknowledgment & Jurat 🤠
Are you needing notary services but find yourself tangled up in the lingo? Let’s unravel two key terms you might encounter: "Acknowledgment" and "Jurat." 🌟
📜 Acknowledgment:
This is all about confirming identity and intent. When you sign a document and then present it to a notary, you’re saying:
"Yep, that’s my signature alright!"
"I signed this willingly, no arm-twisting here!"
"I am who I say I am."
This could be for deeds, contracts, power of attorney, and more.
🔍 Key Point: You CAN sign before meeting the notary, as long as you can acknowledge it in their presence (but we recommend waiting to sign in front of the notary just to be safe from scammers).
📝 Jurat:
Now this one’s a bit different. It’s the notary’s way of saying:
"This person swore in front of me that the info here is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."
"They signed it here with me watching (or I watched them acknowledge a previous signature)."
This is for when your document’s content needs to be affirmed or sworn to, like affidavits or sworn statements.
🔍 Key Point: You MUST sign in front of the notary, after taking an oath or affirmation.
Both are pillars of trust in the notary world, but they serve different purposes! 🏛️
Per Texas Law - YOU must choose the one you want the notary to use. Hopefully, this post will help you decide.
✅ Choose an Acknowledgment when you need to validate your signature.
✅ Choose the Jurat when you need to vouch for the content.
OH, and yes, you can choose both if the receiving party of the document requests or is OK with that option.
And remember, either way, your in-person presence before your friendly neighborhood notary is a must! 📍
