Life took an unexpected detour for Heather Monahan, 42, when she found herself divorced with a 1-year-old son in 2009.

"Financially, I was wiped out as a result of my divorce agreement," the Miami mom says. Compounding her situation, the condo she had purchased for top dollar in 2005 was under water and her job as a sales executive was stressful due to company cutbacks.

Two surprising ways the new alimony tax rules affect your retirement savings

New divorce agreements will be subject to new tax rules starting in 2019, thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Individuals who pay their former spouses will no longer be able to deduct that money. The recipients will no longer pay taxes on that income.

The new rules also usher in changes for how divorcees on both sides may or may not use retirement accounts.

A man cheated with someone else's wife and is now paying for it...with $8.8 million

(CNN)In many states, there's no punishment for adultery. But in North Carolina, it can be a serious offense, as one man came to realize last Thursday.

A judge ordered Francisco Huizar III to pay $8.8 million to Keith King, whose wife he had been seeing for 16 months.

Why so much? Well, most of the money awarded consisted of punitive damages, solely meant to penalize the defendant. But about $2.2 million of it was in compensatory, or tangible damages.

First comes love, then comes … prenup? If you’re a millennial, maybe.

Prenuptial agreements, commonly known as prenups, are legal documents that outline how engaged couples will divide their assets if they divorce. And, in recent years, more millennials have been requesting them, according to a survey of matrimonial lawyers.

One likely reason: Millennials are marrying later than previous generations, with years to build up assets and debt on their own. “I got married at 23, so we put nothing and nothing together,” said Louis Cannataro, partner and founder of Cannataro Park Avenue Financial, where he has advised dozens of millennial clients on their prenups. “But when someone’s getting married in their 30s, there’s a different approach.”

The unromantic, untold story of the great US divorce spree of 1946

The end of World War II marked the beginning of beautiful love stories for thousands of US couples, as sweethearts who’d deferred marriage during the war rushed to wed in peacetime.

But 1946 is also the year of a demographic blip often overlooked in the history of postwar America: an unprecedented spate of divorces.

A look at US marriage rates in the 20th century shows how history influenced couples’ decisions to wed. The marriage rate declined during the hardship of the Great Depression. It spiked upon US entry into World War II, with couples marrying (sometimes rashly) before the husband shipped off overseas. “It’s a great line if you’re a guy: ‘Hey baby, I’m gonna go fight Hi**er. Want to get married?” said Nick Wolfinger, a professor of family and consumer studies at the University of Utah. (As data scientist Randal Olson has pointed out, there was a similar uptick in US weddings at the start of World War I.)

Here’s the new tax-advantaged way to pay alimony

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will eliminate the tax deduction for alimony for divorce agreements executed after Dec. 31, 2018.

Under the old law, these spousal payments were deductible to the payer and taxable to the payee.

IRAs are now a bargaining chip in alimony discussions, as long as your ex can wait to withdraw money.

As the tax advantages of alimony payments disappear in 2019, expect the individual retirement account to feature more prominently in divorce discussions.
