SSA can move some serious diagnoses through review faster. That's the fast track 🚄 . But faster isn't the same as approved.

SSDI isn't only about how serious your condition is. It's also tied to how recently you worked, and that coverage can run out over time, like an insurance policy lapsing.

So a claim can move quickly and still be denied for that reason alone.

If you've worked recently, you're likely still covered. If it's been years, ask before counting on the fast track.

Read it together. Find the date. Ask which doctors SSA actually contacted. Then ask your parent what they want to do next, because that part is theirs.

If anxiety, depression, or PTSD is keeping you from work, the diagnosis on your chart is one part of the case.

The other part is function. SSA reviews four areas of daily working life: understanding and remembering, interacting with others, concentrating and pace, adapting and managing yourself.

A label like "depression, moderate" opens the file. Specific function loss is the rest of the file.

SSA's stated scheduling goal is 30 days from a written appointment request. Send it to the office serving your zip code. Keep the dated copy.

If a deadline on your case falls during the wait, that paper trail can support a good-cause argument later.

SSDI approval rate fell to 36.0% in FY25, down from 38.7% the year before. About 61,000 fewer people approved year over year.

Here is the part that is unusual: new applications also fell over the same period. Those two numbers almost never move the same direction at once. When they do, the system itself has shifted.

This is not a reason to give up. It is a reason to apply better. Preparation in 2026 is doing more work than it did three years ago. Send this to the family member who has been on the fence.
