‘The hands of one are the hands of all.’ A detective said that on an episode of The First 48 this week and it immediately made me think about the felony murder rule — one of the most powerful and misunderstood concepts in criminal law.

In the episode, two brothers allegedly traveled together in separate vehicles while one conducted what initially appeared to be a cell phone sale. After counterfeit money was exchanged, chaos erupted. Shots were fired. One brother allegedly retrieved a shotgun and fired into a home, killing an innocent occupant.

But what changed the legal analysis for me was this: during the investigation, the non-shooting brother reportedly admitted the transaction was not actually about a phone — it involved drugs.

That matters.

Because once the underlying conduct becomes a felony drug transaction, the law begins looking at foreseeability differently. Violence during felonies is not always treated as an isolated act. Under the felony murder rule, if death occurs during the commission of certain felonies, criminal liability can extend beyond the person who actually pulled the trigger.

That is why people sometimes hear prosecutors say things like: ‘The hands of one are the hands of all.’

The felony murder rule is controversial to many, but it exists for a reason: the law recognizes that when people willingly participate together in dangerous felonious conduct, the risk of deadly escalation may become legally foreseeable.

You do not always have to fire the fatal shot to face responsibility for the fatal outcome.

A moment of ‘I was just there’ can become a lifetime sentence.

Not every battle is meant to silence you.
Some are meant to reveal your strength.

Years of resistance, pressure, courtroom battles, and opposition only sharpened the advocate I became.

I know what it feels like to stand alone, to be underestimated, and to keep fighting anyway. That is why my representation is personal, strategic, and relentless.

The mission remains the same: pursue truth, protect my clients, and never surrender integrity for convenience.

After the recent Callais decision gutted the Voting Rights Act, voters here in North Carolina and across the South have found themselves asking the same question: how does this impact us?

Leoneda Inge of WUNC's "Due South" interviewed me, Representative Valerie Foushee, former Representative Eva Clayton, and Senator Natalie Murdock to help answer this question. You can listen to my interview here:

Yesterday’s events in downtown Raleigh were tragic on every level. I am praying for the recovery of the injured attorneys, for their families, for courthouse personnel, and for everyone impacted by the violence. I am also thankful for the swift actions of law enforcement and first responders who moved quickly to prevent further harm.

At the same time, moments like this should remind all of us that behind many court files are real people carrying years of grief, frustration, trauma, and feelings of unheard injustice. As legal professionals, we must continue advocating fiercely while also recognizing the emotional weight many litigants bring into these spaces.

Violence can never be the answer. But neither should we become so desensitized to the human suffering underneath prolonged legal conflict that we stop seeing people before we see cases.

Keeping everyone affected in my thoughts today. ~The Law Offices of Raushanah F. Rodgers, PLLC
