Jonas has been in Raine's life since she was a toddler. Adopting his stepdaughter was something he wanted to do for some time and recently documents were signed so he could legally adopt his stepdaughter, Raine.

So how do stepparent adoptions work? Generally, the stepparent signs a petition that asks the court to allow him/her to adopt the spouse’s child. The spouse signs a consent allowing the adoption. If the child is 12 or older, she/he signs a consent, too. There are also documents, consents and signatures required of the birth parents.

Depending on the county, the clerk may require one home visit to ensure that the child is doing well. This visit is done by an agency. In this case, the Parker Herring Law Group has a relationship with A Child's Hope Adoption Services.

Documents required for filing with the clerk are the birth certificate, the marriage certificate, and the birth certificates of the petitioning stepparents. Once the adoption is finalized, the stepparent is no longer a “stepparent” and assumes full legal responsibility.

We are celebrating moms all week with their updates. With a big Happy Mother's Day, we are checking in with Kriza , one of our first-time moms today! Eleanor was born at 26 weeks and Marc and Kriza her parents have been staying at the Ronald McDonald house. Kriza shares that Eleanor's personality is emerging more and more every day. In the preemie world, she is officially a newborn! Kriza shared a wonderful perspective with A Child's Hope on her thoughts.
