There are a few of these post WWII neighborhoods around.

Looking east down the 700 block of Mills Street (SEE UPDATE IN COMMENTS) in the Hi-Mount neighborhood c. 1952.

Developed between the 1940s and early 1950s, Hi-Mount displays a variety of middle-class home styles from this era including ranch, Minimal Traditional (Colonial Revival) and Minimal Cape Cod.

Most homes were built according to Federal Housing Administration guidelines so the developer could market to home buyers using FHA and VA subsidized mortgages. These design regulations combined with the developer's desire for maximum profit led to the homogenized nature of these post-war subdivisions.

The government subsidized mortgages did wonders for the housing market, but also fanned the flames of racial inequality by excluding Black people. The effects of which are still seen today.

Hi-Mount was developed by familiar names in Raleigh's post-war housing boom--among them, Willie York, Ed Richards and George Wright. The area still retains many FHA spec houses--although that number is quickly dwindling.

Here's your reminder that Kirby Derby is this weekend!

Two soap box derby contestants are seen racing down the 3700 block of Lassiter Mill Road, 10 July 1965.

The 1000 foot course began near the intersection of Lassiter Mill Road and Spring Valley Drive and ran down to a point near the bridge crossing Crabtree Creek.

After many heats and a threatening rain cloud, 14-year-old Harry Rattelade pulled out a win with a 19.5 second run. He was awarded with a $500 savings bond, a handsome trophy and an all expense paid trip to the National Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio later that year in August.

There were five minor crashes and no serious injuries. One crash ended up sending the driver, 11-year-old Larry James, off the road into the brambles lining Lassiter Mill Road. When bystanders pulled him out of the brush, he asked, "Did I win?"

Actress Joan Crawford (far right) is seen at the dedication ceremony for Raleigh's newest Pepsi-Cola bottling plant at 2838 Wake Forest Road, 31 October 1964, present-day location of Costco. To the left of Crawford is Tom Gaddy, president of the local Pepsi franchise.

The 75,000 square foot plant designed by Leif Valand could produce 288,000 bottles per day. It operated here until 2001.

In 1955 Crawford married Alfred Steele, president of Pepsi-Cola. Upon his death in 1959, Crawford took his place on the board of directors. She held the position until 1973 when she was forcibly retired.
