When communicating with your ex (or soon-to-be ex), keep the BIFF method — Brief, Informational, Friendly, and Firm — in mind. It can be incredibly helpful to avoid heated interactions and communicate more effectively. I often remind my clients of this helpful technique developed by Bill Eddy of the High Conflict Institute.

What does mental health have to do with divorce? More than you might think.

Divorce is one of the most challenging experiences a person can go through. If you're struggling, that's completely understandable. I hope you'll give yourself permission to get the support you need. 💙

Your divorce should be about what you're running toward, not just what you're running from. What is the life that you want on the other side of divorce? Use that as a guiding principle throughout the divorce process to stay focused on what matters most.

If, at the end of your mediation or trial, you feel you've won, that doesn't bode well for your future relationship with your ex-spouse. When children are involved, you will likely be at the same soccer games, birthday parties, graduations, and other events. Hannah Hembree Bell and I agree that if both parties feel that they end in a pretty fair situation or are slightly unhappy, 👉 then it's probably the right result. When one party feels it's a slam dunk in their favor, it's harder for the other person to recover. A gentle reminder for divorced parents ... Mother's Day is this weekend. Take a moment to help your kids celebrate their mom. Whether it's prompting them to write a card or picking out a small gift together, these gestures can mean a lot to your child and your co-parent. 💐Even small acts of kindness can go a long way toward creating an effective co-parenting relationship, and that's always in your child's best interest.

💡What if the goal of your divorce wasn't to win — but to make sure everyone could sit at a dinner table together a year from now for the sake of your kids?

Hannah Hembree Bell and I discuss redefining the "win" in divorce and much more in the newest episode of A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction. Find it at https://buff.ly/b7NGE1D or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Whenever I meet with a new client, I always encourage them to work with a therapist or coach during the divorce process. I can guide my clients through the legal process, and financial advisors can create a financial plan. You can't underestimate the value of having someone help you process what you're feeling — and why it's not going to feel this way forever. That's why I'm thrilled to have Oona Metz, author of a new book called 𝘜𝘯𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯, as a guest on A Year and a Day: Divorce Without Destruction.

When your stress level goes ⬆️, cognition goes ⬇️. That's one reason why self-care during divorce is not a luxury. It's a prerequisite for making sound legal and financial decisions that can impact the rest of your life. If you're in the process of a divorce or considering one, don't miss this episode: https://buff.ly/89VnDPz
