Over the next couple of weeks, in no particular order, we will be featuring some of our favorite areas around Raleigh to live in. Beloved for its southern charm and easy-going, family-friendly way of life, Raleigh is home to multiple beautiful suburbs that may appeal more to individuals relocating to Raleigh who prefer living just outside the city. Recognized as having some of the best towns in the nation, the suburbs of Raleigh offer tight-knit communities and endless recreational opportunities for young professionals, couples, families, and retirees alike.
The first two suburbs featured are Apex and Cary!

Apex
Located just 20 minutes from Downtown Raleigh and RDU, Apex is the perfect place to reap the benefits of one of the country’s most tech-driven regions while still enjoying the charms of small-town life. Named for being the highest point on the old Chatham Railroad, Apex is one of the most intact turn-of-the-century railroad towns in the country and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown area, which is mostly centered around quaint Salem Street, is home to local restaurants, bakeries, and boutiques. It’s easy to lose track of time looking at architecture, browsing the shops, and taking long and leisurely lunches in Downtown Apex.
North Carolina’s natural beauty is abundant in Apex, and residents take full advantage of the many green spaces and opportunities for outdoor recreation. A perennial favorite is Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, a collective of nine access areas around the shoreline of a 14,000-acre reservoir. There are seven swim beaches, more than 1,000 campsites, and nearly 14 miles of rustic hiking trails.

Cary
Cary, NC has held its spot in the category of “Safest Places to Live” for years now. The crime is low, and the people are friendly. Community is important, and that can be felt throughout the city. The schools, jobs, and neighborhoods thrive in this area. Not only is this the safest area, but it also ranks as one of the best places to raise a family. The values that the community of Cary, NC have made this area a great environment for children and families to grow. With Raleigh right around the corner and the entertainment Cary has to offer, you will be plenty busy.
The city hosts all types of different festivals throughout the year. There are sporting events, theatre events, and many nature trails. If you love to go golfing, Cary also has some highly reviewed country clubs. Golfing is very popular to the residents in this community. What the city may lack in nightlife, they make up for with festivals and events for their residents. Cary holds multiple local festivals a year for its residents and visitors. The Beer and Bacon Festival, Chinese Lantern Festival, and Southeast Crab Fest are a few of the many exciting festivals.

During the holiday season, the Raleigh area is aglow with light displays, tree lightings and other seasonal presentations. Below are some of the best happenings and places for Christmas and other holiday pageantry!

51st Annual Historic Oakwood Candlelight Tour
Dec. 10 and 11 Historic Oakwood, one of Raleigh's prettiest and most historic neighborhoods (many of which are dated to the mid-1800s to early 1900s), has its own small-town feel. Elegantly decorated for the holidays, this favorite event gives you the rare chance to step inside about a dozen private homes, each of which is staffed with docents who tell the rich history of this Century Victorian neighborhood.
This is a ticketed event starting at $30 and availability may be limited.

Christmas Lights on Holt Rd.
Open on select days, Nov. 24-28; Dec. 2-4; Dec. 9-11; Dec. 16-18; Dec. 20-26
For more than 10 years now, the Guerra family's spectacular light display at their home in Apex has drawn a chorus of 'oohs and aahs' from visitors. Bigger and more colorful every year, the free-admission, drive-in style show has grown so much that the Apex Police Department has stepped in to help direct traffic.
Note: The display is not open every night, and some nights are reserved for families with special needs and other community members. The best way to keep track is following on Facebook. The display is generally open from 6:15-9:15pm and the dates above are tentatively scheduled to be open to the general public.

Piper Lights

In Wake Forest, Piper Lights—a family-run light display that's been in action for 30 years now—is set for another big holiday season. The seven-acre drive-thru light display that connects yards and jumps across a pond received national recognition in 2016 when they were named winners on ABC television network's Great Christmas Light Fight.

Are you thinking of selling your home during the holiday season? While this is a busy time of year, it can actually be a great time to sell. If you stage your home appropriately for the holidays, the cozy, celebratory vibe can really appeal to potential buyers. Here are some helpful tips and tricks that we would like to share with you!

1. Create some front door appeal. A simple, live wreath on the front door is classy. Add a big bow for major impact. Let them know this is just the beginning of a house they will love.

2. Curb appeal is also important. What will your buyers see as they drive up to your house? This is where their excitement starts. Add a colorful mat (preferably a non-holiday one) outside the door. A big urn or two next to the front door is preferred. You can add fake or real Christmas trees and decorate them if you like, just keep it simple.

3. Keep outside holiday decorations to minimum. Yard decorations, outdoor house lights, and holiday collections are distracting and should be kept to a minimum or avoided altogether. Home staging is always about less versus more. This is especially true outside.

4. Minimal decorations inside, too. Inside, one simple Christmas tree would be best, with simple white lights and standard ornaments in one color if possible (or no tree at all is preferred). Remember, not everyone celebrates Christmas. The more distracting your tree is - the less of your house the buyers will see.

Remember, potential home buyers are not there to look at your stuff, they are there to fall in love and see if they can envision themselves living in your space. Loads of presents under the tree are sometimes hard for small children to resist so keep that in mind when your house is on the market.

5. Fresh displays of flowers or holiday greenery can be added in the kitchen and dining room if desired. Go for one big, well-executed display versus lots of little things. Don’t go overboard with Christmas decorations in each room. Decorations can easily turn to clutter which eats up equity.

6. Stow your holiday collections. Definitely don’t get out your collections of nutcrackers, Santas or other holiday display items that will distract your buyers. These are the reasons buyers leave a house and ask their realtor, “Was there a fireplace in the living room? I was so busy looking at the stuff, I don’t remember.”

7. Bake up an offer. Freshly baked slice-and-bake cookies on the counter are a quick way to make the house smell fabulous and are a great way to win over the buyers - and hungry Realtors! Refreshments can help, too, so have some bottled water or anything else bottled or canned. Buyers get hungry and thirsty when out looking for the right house. Be sure to provide them with some napkins and it will keep them lingering in your home longer. Make sure your kitchen is spic-and-span spotless because while hanging out, they will notice everything!

Remember, selling your home over the holidays isn’t that much different than any other time of the year. Plus it’s a great time to sell since January is the busiest month for corporate relocations. By using these simple tips to help you stage your home, it will stand out from your competition and help you win the home selling game over the holiday season.

If you are spending this holiday season in a new home, our team at Murphy Law believes a special celebration is in order. A new home is the perfect excuse to try out some new holiday traditions. Try out these ways to celebrate in your new home or to help you get to know your new neighborhood.

Host a Holiday Housewarming
Everyone loves a festive gathering, so celebrate your new home by hosting a housewarming party filled with holiday cheer. Start by decorating the front of your home with holiday string lights and large ornaments that illuminates the trees. Next, welcome guests with a front walkway lined with candy canes, reindeer, or baskets of poinsettias that lead to a holiday wreath on your front door. When guests step inside, be sure to offer a tour of your new place!

If it's your first holiday season calling Raleigh home, stop by these light shows:
Nights of Lights: Nights of Lights is a drive-thru holiday light show in Dorothea Dix Park. A 1.3-mile route winds through the park filled with towering, illuminated oak trees, elaborate light displays, and local artworks.
