The goal of the BPLA is to provide educational programs and a forum for the interchange of ideas and information concerning patent, trademark, and copyright laws. Through a volunteer Board of Governors and its various committees, the BPLA organizes and hosts educational seminars, social events and conventions. The Association also comments on rules and legislation affecting the profession.

The Boston Intellectual Property Law Association proudly presents the Honorable Timothy B. Dyk with this year’s BIPLA Distinguished Public Service Award.

Timothy B. Dyk was appointed by President William J. Clinton in 2000. Prior to his appointment, Judge Dyk was Partner and Chair, Issues and Appeals Practice Area, at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue from 1990 to 2000. He was Adjunct Professor at Yale Law School from 1986 to 1987 and 1989, at the University of Virginia Law School in 1984 and 1985, and from 1987 to 1988, and at the Georgetown University Law Center in 1983, 1986, 1989 and 1991. Judge Dyk was Associate and Partner, Wilmer Cutler & Pickering from 1964 to 1990. From 1963 to 1964, Judge Dyk served as Special Assistant to Assistant Attorney General Louis F. Oberdorfer. He also served as law clerk to Chief Justice Warren from 1962 to 1963, and to Justices Reed and Burton from 1961 to 1962. Judge Dyk received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1958 and an LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1961. He was First President of the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court from 2000 to 2001 and President of the Giles Sutherland Rich Inn of Court from 2006 to 2007. Judge Dyk is co-author of the Chapter on Patents in the Fifth Edition of the treatise, Business and Commercial Litigation in Federal Courts. He was the recipient of the 2012 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Federal Circuit and the 2016 Honorable William C. Conner Inn of Court Excellence Award. He is a member of the American Law Institute and is the author of a memoir titled The Education of a Federal Judge, Anthem Press, 2022.

The BIPLA thanks Judge Dyk for his many decades of service on the bench and is pleased to award him the 2026 Distinguished Public Service Award.

Join us on September 23, 2026 for an evening at the picturesque John Joseph Moakley US Courthouse along the Boston waterfront as we honor Judge Dyk. The event will open with a cocktail reception at 6PM followed by a seated dinner at 7PM.

The BIPLA Chemical Practice Committee will be running a low-key roundtable event to informally socialize/ network while considering ideas for future programming/ events. This will be at Trillium Fort Point (50 Thomson Pl, Boston, MA 02210) at 5.30 on June 11 (ending around 6.30-7.00). Those interested in meeting the committee, brainstorming interesting ideas for future events and generally chatting about chemistry IP are most welcome! (By joining us on June 11, there is no obligation to commit to planning future events.) Attendees are responsible for their own food and drink tabs.
