We are thrilled to celebrate John D. Meara, who was officially sworn in as President of the Rhode Island Association for Justice (RIAJ) at the organization's Annual Awards Reception on September 24.

This leadership role reflects John's dedication to the legal profession, his commitment to protecting the rights of individuals, and his continued advocacy for justice throughout Rhode Island.

We are also proud to recognize fellow MBM attorney Colleen Giles, who was installed as Secretary Treasurer, and congratulate Donna M. Di Donato on her installation as President Elect.

The evening also celebrated outstanding contributions to Rhode Island's legal community, with honors presented to:

By 1892, Mercy, her mother, and her sister had died, and her brother Edwin was wasting away and seeing Mercy in his dreams. To frightened neighbors, it looked as if something was draining the life out of him.

They exhumed Mercy’s body and found her unusually well preserved: her hair and nails longer, and blood still in her heart. The townspeople immediately believed the worst—a vampire!

To “cure” Edwin, they burned Mercy’s heart and liver and made a tonic for him to drink. Sadly, he died less than two months later.

Was Mercy a vampire? Or did she and the rest of the family succumb to tuberculosis? Was she well-preserved because she died in the dead of winter? Or because she was undead?

Mercy’s story is one of Rhode Island’s strangest legends and a fascinating glimpse into how people once tried to explain diseases they didn’t yet understand.

On October 9, 2015, the RIAJ presented Mark Mandell with its “Case of the Year” award for his work in Beauchamp v. Rhode Island Hospital.

We represented the family in a medical negligence case that resulted in a $31.5 million judgment for devastating and permanent brain injury. At the heart of it, this case was about the family, accountability, and making sure this terrible failure was acknowledged.
