Many people feel a sense of relief after completing their will. It's an important step in planning for the future.

But here's something families don't always realize: A will generally takes effect after someone passes away. It doesn't give another person the authority to make financial or healthcare decisions while you're living.

That's where other important planning documents come in.

A durable power of attorney allows someone you trust to handle financial matters on your behalf.

The house is full. Everyone is talking. Dinner is running late. The television is on. Grandchildren are playing.

For most of the family, it feels like the holidays.

For a person living with dementia, it may feel overwhelming.

Sometimes the traditions we love need a few thoughtful adjustments so the person we love can continue to be part of them.

That is what we’ll talk about during When Traditions Change, part of the Caregiver Confidence Series.

We’ll explore practical ways to manage noise and overstimulation, prepare extended family, create a quiet space, adjust meals and schedules, and build traditions around what a person can comfortably enjoy now.

Yesterday, Van Dyck Law Group had the pleasure of visiting Artis Senior Living of Princeton Junction for an educational presentation on Legal Planning with a Dementia Diagnosis, led by Attorney Amanjit Heir.

A dementia diagnosis can bring many questions for individuals and their families. Understanding the importance of estate planning, legal decision-making, and preparing for future care needs can help families move forward with greater clarity and peace of mind.

The holidays are built around traditions. But when someone you love is living with dementia, some of those traditions may need to change.

And different does not mean less meaningful.

I’m excited to bring When Traditions Change to CareOne at Somerset Valley on Thursday, November 12.

This complimentary workshop is about making the holidays, celebrations and family gatherings more comfortable and meaningful for everyone. We’ll talk about practical ways to reduce overstimulation, adjust expectations, prepare family members, adapt familiar activities and create new traditions around what works now.

The goal isn’t to create the “perfect” holiday.

It’s to create moments where the person you love can still feel included, comfortable and connected.

A wonderful morning of networking and building meaningful connections!

A sincere thank you to Amboy Bank in Dayton for graciously hosting our CCNJ meeting. It was a pleasure connecting with such a welcoming group of professionals who share a commitment to serving our communities.

A special thank you to Theresa Tomaszewski, Branch Manager in Manalapan; Colleen Havecker, Branch Manager in Monroe; Jennifer Fletcher, Vice President in Old Bridge; and Lisa Zukowski, Assistant Branch Manager in Dayton.

It was wonderful meeting all of you and learning more about the work you do throughout our communities.

A little rain was never going to stop this group.

Van Dyck Law Group was proud to come together for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and stand alongside so many families, caregivers, professionals and community members united by one purpose: a future without Alzheimer’s.

For our team, this cause is deeply connected to the work we do every day. We meet families navigating dementia, caregiving and difficult decisions, and we see firsthand the strength, love and resilience that journey can require.

That made it especially meaningful to step outside the office, walk together and be part of a much larger community committed to making a difference.

Thank you to everyone who walked with us, stopped by our table, shared a conversation or simply showed up in support. And a special thank you to our Van Dyck team members who came out despite the weather.

The rain came down. The umbrellas went up. And we kept walking.

What happens when professionals, caregivers, advocates, and community leaders come together around one shared goal?

Conversations that matter.

Van Dyck Law Group was proud to be part of the Dementia Academy at Monroe Village, an afternoon dedicated to education, connection, and a deeper understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, brain health, and the experiences of the families navigating these journeys every day.

The room was full, the conversations were thoughtful, and the commitment to supporting individuals living with dementia and the people who care for them was evident throughout the program.

We are especially grateful for opportunities like this because dementia care does not happen in isolation. It takes informed families, compassionate professionals, strong community partnerships, and a willingness to keep learning from one another.

Thank you to The Dementia Center, Monroe Village, the presenters, and everyone who contributed to such a meaningful program.
